"WW II espionage" - By Diceman (Tualatin, or United States)
This is the type of espionage movie in the same genre as The Spy Who Came in From the Cold in the sense it smacks of truth. There are no winners or heroics in this movie, just the money. James Mason at his best and supposedly based on a true story. Not a shoot em' up or blow em' up movie.(65) -
") This is a terrific film noire about post-war Berlin" - By Paul B. (New York)
Don't be misled or put off by the silly poster (Terror! Vice! Violence!) This is a terrific film noire about post-war Berlin; it captures the sense of dread and paranoia that haunted Berlin as the Communists moved to strangle East Germany and turn it into a Stalinist police state. This film is a kind of sequel to the masterpiece "The Third Man" starring Orson Wells. James Mason is one of the great actors of all time. Brilliant acting, directing and camera work.(26) -

A quaint adaptation of the classic novel by Jules Verne; it's not exactly faithful. Still, it makes for a good adventure flick. It's a sentimental favorite of mine ever since I first saw it as a kid. The best thing about this film is the score (which I also had to have). Bernard Herrmann is my favorite film composer. On the down side, also included, are several ditties warbled by Pat Boone. Why he shared topped billing with James Mason is anyone's guess (or why he ended up with more screen time!?). It's an odd casting choice that I wonder about every time I watch this movie. No one has ever accused Pat Boone of being a great thespian, especially considering the way he maltreated a Scottish accent (which was mostly there and gone). Next to him, I didn't even mind ... full review(429) -

I haven't made my way through all of this 5-disc set yet -- only THE OCTOBER MAN, SNOWBOUND and THEY MET IN THE DARK. The latter, made during World War II on a budget far too low for its 90-minute-plus running time, is hardly a "noir" by anyone's description, unless you want to count the number of night shots in the first half as a basis for using the term. Rather, THEY MET IN THE DARK is a threadbare spy story that would bring discredit to the entire collection if most of what followed wasn't as good as it is. As it is, you can ignore it -- despite being one of the more accessible films of Czech-born director Karel Lamac, and move on to the rest of the set. (For the record, THEY MET IN THE DARK stars James Mason and Joyce Howard [a distinctly unattractive lead in this ... full review(19) -
"One of the great classics of film" - By William Linsley (Shelton CT USA)
This is one of the finest films of its period and, in fact, in the whole history of film. Carol Reed is best known for The Third Man, but in my view this is his masterpiece. It is a moving tale of an IRA leader who is badly wounded in a holdup, during which he kills a man who tries to stop him, and falls from the escape car. Falling in and out of consciousness, and able to move only with difficulty, he is sought by his friends and also the object of a manhunt by the police. The film focuses on the love of a young woman for him and her attempt to rescue him. Meanwhile, he is bounced from stranger to stranger, each of whom sees him through the prism of self-interest. A fine musical score, great cinemetography and acting make this film outstanding. Unfortunately it is no ... full review(101) -
"Timeless Beauty, Mystery and Romance" - By J. Kara Russell (The Eastern Shore of Maryland)
This is one of a handful of films from this period of saturated color and the gorgeous cinematography of Jack Cardiff. Many of these films incorporate within their story and script elements of literature, art, mystery and timeless love that transcends death. This one delivers all.
Ava Gardner's character is beautiful and untouchable in this film, her heart is as cold as the statues she caresses, her attention as bloodthirsty as the bullfights of her ex-lover... one of many we discover. Her requirements of a lover are that she be given all, and of course, no one can deliver. The story begins in one of these trite vacation atmospheres - playground of the very rich dilletantes. We are told she was a singer - not a very good one by her own admission. We are treated to Gardner's real singing voice, ... full review(88) -
"NIce movie to watch" - By Peter Olson, and I am real (Poynette, WI)
Remembered this subtle Christian-themed movie from years ago. It has the action adventure and confused love story of the bygone era in Hollywood. Our Prince Valiant goes up against worth foes to reclaim his Kingship in Norway, while being blocked by an evil knight from King Arthur's Court. Nice adventure. Easy watching! Good guys win!(212) -
"One of my all time favorite movies" - By Just me.
I saw this movie years ago and couldn't find it anywhere. Broke down and got it on VHS -- only to have the machine eat the tape! But now it streams! Wonderful performances by Ann Todd and James Mason. Interesting story about early psychoanalysis. Am very glad that I got to see it again! :)(82)
