"Very pleased........" - By Angie (Beautiful Tennessee)
I'm very pleased with this purchase. I knew exactly what I was getting. The movies are all listed for us to read before purchasing. At 5 bucks, I'm suprised that anyone would complain! It's the Duke for goodness sakes! I'd give 5 bucks for a collection of commercials that he stared in!

"That'll be the day..." - By Stone Dog (IN United States)
Big Jake, an excellent John Wayne western movie - and produced by Wayne's own production company, Batjac - and has all the familiar elements we've come to expect from Wayne with a few wrinkles.

The film begins during the turn of the 20th century at Jacob McCandles' ranch where a gang of kidnappers take the young grandson of "Big Jake" and demand the payment of one million dollars in return for the boy's life. The gang flees to Mexico with the young boy after ambushing the party of Texas Rangers that have gone after them. Jake, played by Wayne, is estranged from his family, living in the part of the west that is still wild when news comes of the kidnapping. His wife has summoned him for the purpose of taking the ransom to the kidnappers and bringing the boy back. As you can imagine, the kidnappers picked on ... full review

"decent and a GREAT price!" - By asdf
Fun stuff. A bit campy in spots, but hey, that's how movies were back then. You get 4 movies on 3 disks (one is double sided). I am not going to take the time to review each. It is quintessential John Wayne WWII flicks of that era. He definitely did better movies (writing, acting, sets, actors) than these, but these are ok.

    Donovan's Reef
    Amazon Video ~ John Wayne
    Price: $2.99
"Donovan’s Reef Should Be a Musical" - By Moving Pictures Gen (Tujunga Ca. USA)
Donovan’s Reef could easily be a musical.

A happy light weight comedy with some cultural clinks which I expected, as well as the politically correct crowd, who I also expected to be hooting and howling in their reviews about male chauvinism, violence and any other kind of modern hoo-hah that they love to complain about.

What really surprised me and ingratiated me, however, was the lacking number of politically correct reviewers, who were clearly in the minority review wise. I was of course very happy to vote that each one of their negative reviews were worthless. (And even got to insult a couple of the reviewers in their own reply comments section.)

There were some sad endings to this happily ending comedy feature, namely with the many references to cigarettes, and “have a cigarette” lines, contrasted with John Wayne’s passing away from lung cancer in real life.

"Nice collection - super for a fan of John Wayne westerns!" - By Cappy
Purchased these for my 88 year old father who LOVES John Wayne. He was super pleased with this "set" and told me that they are four of his favorite movies! The product was received within 2 days of purchase and were packaged well and in good condition. We haven't watched them yet but I'm hoping from other reviews that I read that they will be in good shape. I will update after we get a chance to watch. Great gift idea for those John Wayne fans per Dad's enthusiasm!

"John Wayne in one of the best performances of his career." - By Henry-Clyde (North of Nowhere, South of Everywhere, East of There, West of Here)
"CHISUM" is one of John Wayne's most entertaining and exciting movies, not to mention historically significant. While some of the names and situations have been changed, such as John Tunstall to Henry Tunstall, and making Billy the Kid misguided instead of an outlaw, none of that detracts from the excellent characters and well-written script. The reason for this is that while the movie may not be exactly true compared to what really happened, it is all still very realistic to the Old West itself. When that happens and it is presented to the audience in an effective way, it makes the movie that much better.
John Wayne stars as John Chisum, a bold but content cattle rancher during the time of the Lincoln County War. "CHISUM" is a movie that is much too complex to explain at length, having far too many characters and occurrences. However, the plot is still ... full review

"The Duke at his best" - By Old-dude (Central Idaho)
I grew up watching Western Movies and have been addicted to them for ages. John Wayne (Marion Mitchell Morrison) movies were always a favorite as you always knew that when good vs. evil the outcome was always (well, mostly) for the good. The white hat vs. black hat thing. Obviously there are much better movie critics out there!
My point is that I even (still) enjoy his old B movies and now have this collection in our DVD Movie Library.
But the packaging is horrible. Fortunately, I have a DVD, CD polisher that took out most of the scratches caused by the cardboard packaging. I then put the DVDs into paper sleeves for long term storage.
    Good value!

    Island in the Sky
    Amazon Video ~ John Wayne
    Price: $9.99
"Decent movie" - By Mikey B. (Newport News, Va United States)
Not one of John Wayne's best movies by any measure, but not a bad movie either. Would I watch it again , sure. By the time this movie was made
(1953 ) Mr. Wayne had made a name for himself and this movie shows his ability to show emotion very well. The story itself is good but it's not really fleshed out that well. The screen writer can't make up his mind as to the movie being a docudrama or a pure fiction work. Confused is the best word.

"The blu ray version is much clearer than the standard DVD" - By David Smith (Penn Valley, PA USA)
I compared the 60th Anniversary Special Edition (Blu ray) to the standard DVD distributed by Artisan (John Wayne Collection). I did this using a 53 inch Sony edge lit LCD TV and an up-scaling Sony Blu Ray DVD player. The difference at every level is amazing. Clarity of image -- the standard DVD looked like a video tape transfer and had very soft details (at times almost blurred). The blu ray detail showed hair, details of brick, etc. There was no comparison with respect to color quality. The blu ray colors sparkled with the very bright, vivid reds that one expects with technicolor. The blu ray version was generally brighter than the standard version. I did not detect a major difference in sound between the two versions. If you have a reasonably large TV screen the blu ray will provide a much ... full review

"5 great stars in one great movie" - By movie viewer (Canton, OH USA)
I had not seen this movie in over thirty years, so I had forgotten just how good it was. To start with, you have John Wayne in the lead. Then you have Dean Martin in one of his few serious roles. Then comes Ricky Nelson, who could have been a great actor if he had been given a few more serious roles and not simply used as a cameo to bring in the teenage girls. Angie dickinson, doing her best as romantic interest for a man old enough to be her father. Then we come to Walter Brennan at his crotchety best. With a cast like this you just have to have a good movie, but add in a plot with more twists than a fifty foot lariat, then top it off with a great song sung by Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson. Pure entertainment. ... full review

"Amazing restoration on this 6 movie set. I don't think we will ever see these John Wayne classics every look and sound better" - By Karl Anderson (San Francisco)
I love John Wayne but normally the b-movies he made in the 30's are in such bad condition they are almost not watchable except for the most hard core fan. Legend did a wonderful job on cleaning up the sound and video on these classics. Each volume shows the movie in color and you also get the restored B&W Version. I must admit that I enjoyed watching them in color for the first time. The restored B&W version look really good too. They did some new editing of the films to make the flow better and added a sound track to them. I personally found the sound track and tightening up on the edits to make a big difference. It is the first time I found these old movies to be easy, fun and enjoyable to watch. Great job legend I would like see you do it with more ... full review
