"A far better movie and story than the second movie for sure!" - By CMac -Amazon Addict! (USA)
This movie was much better than the second one that came out over the summer of 2016. While "Through the looking glass" was good, the visuals were the only truly great part about the movie. The story lacked volume and backing, and often got muddled. While this first version was far superior and actually showed Alice fighting to help her friends. Alice is supposed to be a little girl after all, and not an adult (like they are pushing far harder in the second version), at least in this version she could pass for a sulky teenager over a little girl, the second movie gives you no option on asking how old she may be as she is a ship captain sailing her fathers ship all over the world.
A far richer tale and beautifully portrayed in this first movie for certain!(2,169) -
"Elegant and under-rated" - By RES (Boston, MA, USA)
"Secret Window" is based on the Stephen King novella "Secret Window, Secret Garden," and is one of the best King adaptations: in some ways, the film does a better job with the material than the source. The plot is similar to quite a few other King stories like "The Dark Half," "Misery," and even "The Shining." Like so much of that author's work, it deals, in twisted ways, with potential dilemmas that writers (e.g., King himself) might face. Critics largely panned the film because they felt that it lacked suspense, it was derivative, etc. But that's not really the point. The film is a crisp character study of personality break-down during the dissolution of a marriage. On those terms, it succeeds brilliantly. Johnny Depp, a chameleon of an actor, once again provides the lead with astonishing style, individuality, insight, subtlety, and nuance. The rest of the cast is similarly attuned ... full review(648) -
"Boss of Boston Lowlife" - By R. S. Kern (Colorado)
I liked this one a lot. Long past his heartthrob era, Johnny Depp became a real actor able to deliver a chill when his face subtly changes to an expression of expectant evil -- which it does frequently in Black Mass. Telling a true story about a mobster responsible for so many deaths could become a "Valachi Papers" exercise in just one killing after another, which this film does, but there is that deep family / friendship / loyalty thing done in a fresh way to keep it real. It also mixes in a lot that is Boston as a character, we really felt the desperation of citizens, the detachment of the authorities, the rot of the bad parts of town. The story was engrossing, and as each newly introduced character lines up in either the "how's this one going to get it?" or "I'm gonna get that ... full review(2,071) -

Great "remake" of a classic tv show. Fun for the whole family, assuming everyone in the family is over 13. Love the subtle qips! Eva Green, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Michelle Pfeiffer are great in this film. The characters are so full of life and multidimensional.(2,345) -

"Very Good Cinema to a Great Stage Musical" - By Samuele M. Rinaldi
This movie version of one of the best stage musicals of all time does a very good job translating this for the cinema. Johnny Depp is very intriguing by his characterization and Tim Burton's large eyed characters and pale skinned style fits the original creator Stephen Sondheim's stage style perfectly. The use of modern cinema stars does a wonderful job of expanding the appeal of this story to the modern movie goer.
The orchestration is very good and true to the original music but many of the original songs are played rather than sung and this may be disappointing to the Broadway Musical buffs. The singing is good for the most part but the person who plays the character of Mrs. Lovett is at times flat with her singing that may wear on your musical ears. Mrs. Lovett's acting and macabre look fits the part ... full review(1,268) -

"Satisfying exploration of potentials in the inevitable creation of a digital human being" - By Stacy
I can easily envision it happening the way it happens in the movie - when a human chooses to change their substrate into digital form rather than become nonexistent and be certainly and forever separated from the ones they love. At least with that first experiment there are plausible possibilities for reunion. Not only that, but a human in digital form could theoretically process information at the same speed as the fastest computers, plus utilize human-style reasoning and problem-solving skills - which computers have not previously achieved. The inevitable and shockingly fast jumps in technologies, including physical human evolution - and the fears and doubts that accompany it - are explored emotionally and intellectually with engaging performances by the actors. The performance that stands out most in my mind is that of Rebecca Hall who plays Evelyn, the wife of main character, Will (Johnny Depp's character). It was easy to ... full review(1,788) -
"For Those Who Think Young" - By Ronald Fisher (los angeles,CA USA)
Not that glamorizing drug use or dealing is a good thing, this is a film which captures the '70's scene quite nicely thank you very much. The true story of the exploits of George Jung creates an entertaining movie out of what must have been a dubious dicey life of this person.
Johnny Depp is a brilliant character actor but I have never been impressed with him as a leading man. His performance here is kinda a exception. He shows how a basically good human being can get caught up in a whirlwind beyond his control. Greed, adventure, love and the love of the good life surface through the performance.
Paul Reubens is adept at showing Derek Foreal as a real person behind the ruthless, powerful, gay facade.
Again, never got off on Penelope Cruz, but she fit here and did a yeomanlike job.

"This older child loved it" - By ferd (st louis,mo)
This was a modified telling of the true story of Sir James Matthew Barrie, author of Peter Pan and other works. The historical facts were changed ad rearranged but the spirit of the story was true. I found it fascinating that a man who should have grown up very flawed, considering his childhood being raised by a severely depressed mother, turned out so well. He was very child-like in his approach to life but went on to create lasting stories and left a great legacy in an adult world. The players in this movie were all first rate and the story engaging. The message - If we should only "believe". Great for children who want to believe in fairies and a fairy world and adults who seek and find Something or Someone greater to believe in.(2,198) -

Other reviews - negative ones - fault the movie for the overly quiet or mumbled dialogue, the quality of the filming, the dragging plot, etc. etc. etc. Here's my take:
1. The quiet dialogue was counterpoint to the raging violence, thus intensifying it. (I had no trouble understanding the dialogue.) The similarity of tone between Depp and Bale pointed out the similarities and differences of character as well, helping to blur distinctions between the inner workings of lawmen and lawless. Christian Bale's monotone was ideal for showing the singleminded intensity with which Purvis pursued Dillinger, and Depp's low voice as Dillinger stood in stark contrast to the violence he was willing to wreak.
2. The filming seemed in keeping with the era being portrayed, falling into almost sepia tones at times, and having a film noir quality that is perfect for ... full review(597) -

Wow what an experience!
It's the typical Terry Gilliam film though perhaps not quite as good as Brazil but much better than Baron Munchhausen.
Incredible special effects, great acting, interesting script & dialogues.
Highly recommended for all Gilliam fans!(763) -
