"insights with balance" - By Jae Won
Some months ago, I travelled to Europe for a training program for communication skills, and there was a suggestion by the communications coach, after learning that i came from Korea, that I should write an essay to explain the Korea the people and the country with a spin on doing business there and submit to one of those management magazines. He said that while Korea profile is growing internationally, the country and its people are still an enigma. That was a surprise to me but as I thought about it more, he was completely right. Between China and Japan, it is not as if there isn't enough to talk about in East Asia. So Korea's share of the limelight would have been somewhat limited. That is starting to change as the country starts to become a more active player on the global arena in many facets of political, economics and ... full review

"Good read" - By Minou (Los Angeles, USA)
This book was a good read. I got plenty of information on the Korean culture by reading it but was hoping for a more detailed description of culture and habits. Will have to find another book to keep the learning. Recommend this book if you want to get a good glimpse at the Korean culture in general.

"A Great First Book on Modern Korea by a Good Writer - Not an old-school history book" - By Amazon Customer (Virginia, USA)
Don Oberdorfer's "The Two Koreas: A Contemporary History" is the perfect first book for anyone interested in the history and trauma in Korea over the last 50 years. This text was required reading in a graduate-level course on the Government and Security in Korea.

Oberdorfer knows Korea. From his first visit in 1953 as an Army Lieutenant through his interviews of the presidential candidates before the 1987 election, and his visit to Pyongyang in 1991, Oberdorfer continually followed Korean politics - mostly from the seat of a press member for the Washington Post. As he recounts in the text, Oberdorfer was sitting in the National Theater in Seoul on August 15th, 1974 when the shots rang out at ROK President Park Chung Hee, killing the ROK First Lady, the president survived. This personal touch of first hand accounts, compiled with interviews of major actors in ... full review

"Interesting, resourceful book for general readers" - By Anonymous
This book is accessible to general readers; is filled with creative maps and pictures. Most importantly, it is written by a group of dedicated history teachers, and thus engages us in with very interesting and intelligent questions. It is written from the perspective of Korean people for the non-Korean readers and provides us with a unique angle to lesser known histories of a lesser known nation.

"Perfect for Self-Study or Academic Works" - By Anna (Olympia, WA)
I am not a scholar, nor do I pretend to be - I am an enthusiast of primary sources and history!

This book, while scholarly in appearance, is very easy to read and meshes perfectly with my interest (and very probably yours as well if you are looking at this book on Amazon, teehee). The general layout of the sections flow together seamlessly. This is most notable in the separate fonts: one used for the author's description and one for the source. (It is a little frustrating that the font types are not included in the publishing information because the source-font is one I want to use! Guess I have to find it the old fashioned way: looking at all the fonts available in my Windows Word program, grr....) The descriptions of the sources themselves are informative and give context to each source as it pertains to the section ... full review
