"One of the best movies out there depicting what early settlers had to endure." - By Viewer_in_residence
I was fascinated with this movie when I first saw it. Really drew me in, and I was glued to the tube while watching. The relationship of the brothers was somewhat troubling. I find that it would have been better if the older brother didn't dismiss his younger brother so easily. Also getting ripped off in California with 49er scrip was a total drag.
The end was very sad and it would be good to have a follow up with the children of the settlers. But, I'd sure like to find this on DVD for a better picture. Would buy it in a heartbeat! (don't go for the dubbed one though, very sad they destroyed the movie that way. The download version had the original language with subtitles - only way to watch it!) Highly recommended.(37) -
"40 Carats" - By nuova
40 Carats, is an all time favourite movie of mine. I first saw it at the movie in the early 1970s and loved it then and have always wanted to own a copy.
The story starts on a Greek island and shifts to Manhattan. It stars the very cute 22 year old Edward Albert Jnr with love match 39+ gorgeous Liv Ullmann and co-staring Gene Kelly.
Although not digitized the quality is still pretty good and doesn't detract from this wonderful "chick flick". Lots of fun and romance, this delightful feel good movie will leave you smiling and feeling uplifted. If you like romance movies then I'd recommend 40 Carats.(96) -
"In A World Of Chaos "Lost Horizon" is a flawed but beautiful "Musical Epic"" - By Larry Heller (El Sobrante, CA United States)
Already I'm hoping for "Blu Ray" but even without it "Sony/Columbia" is to be congradulated
to RESTORING a version never seen of a very unpopular musical. I believe both the story
and "some" of the musical numbers makes more sense today and it belongs with "HAIR" as an
anti war musical. So this review is for the "RESTORED VERSION" JUST RELEASED.
Let go of your cynical views and look at the philosophy behind this film..a "world not in
chaos," where "we are responsible for INDIRECT suicide."
I was taken away by the beauty of the story and the modern "operetta" score by "Burt Bachrach"
and find nothing laughsble in the choreography of the complete "Living Together, Growing Together." This film is a 70's liberal dream. This is a film that hits the "heart" if you
let go and allow a very different musical than ever made. I can't ... full review(359) -
"A crime should not prescribe !" - By Hiram Gòmez Pardo Venezuela (Valencia, Venezuela)
All the possible judicial obstacles allowed to the real SS officer who followed the rules and murder dozens of innocent children on April 20 1945 to be exonerated of being found guilty.
Fons Rodenmaker , the famous Dutch film maker elaborated a meticulous script with superb performances of all the cast . The poignant encounter between Ruthie and his brother in the Court was magnificently convincing.
Liv Ullman once more shows she is still a radiant actress in this exigent role . And Maximilain Shell is in the top too .(10) -
"The Abdication" - By Martha E. Keller (Ohio)
The Abdication was a facinating movie. It was almost believable and I wonder if it was based on a true story. Liv Ullmann is a great actress and played the part of the troubled queen very well. I would have liked to have seen her play the part of a queen more with beautiful dresses and jewelry but then she would have spoiled the vision of the tom boy that she played. Peter Finch has always been one of my favorite actors and have purchased at least a dozen of his films. In this one he does the part of a Cardinal of the Catholic church and it is he who must "examine" the queen to see if she is sincere in becoming a believer of the Faith. It is a struggle for both of them especially when they fall in love. The scene when ... full review(10) -

Persona is not a story of two women, it is the story of one woman. At the start of the film, she is having a breakdown. At the end of the film, she is back together again, ready to return to the world. The woman--call her Vogler--is not "everyman" or "everywoman." She is Bergman's ideal of the creative personality, with its horror show of neuroticisms. Liv represents the inner woman. Liv is silent to the world, but she is the essence of what is expressed by Vogler as an actress. Bibi is the persona--the outer woman. Bibi is the mask that Vogler presents to the world, her mechanism for coping with reality. The analysis of Vogler that the psychologist provides is 100% Bergman, and "on the nose." The easiest way to dial into the movie is to focus on the scene in which the husband reappears. This is the only ... full review(143)
