While thumbing through analysis books in a local college library, looking for a proof or justification of the method of Lagrange multipliers, I fortuitously stumbled on this baby. Abraham, Marsden, and Ratiu were breezing through this method without justification-just an exercise left to the reader. I found the proof in a chapter of Apostol's book on applications of partial differentiation. It follows from the implicit and/or inverse function theorems-more challenging than the elegant AMR examples-but comprehensible and rigorous now via Apostol. This was the 1st edition but judging from the other reviews of the 2nd edition the content is pretty much the same.
Apostol's approach is more like the method of classical analysis rather than Rudin's formal metric topological approach. Apostol doesn't even define an abstract metric, just sticks to the usual Euclidean. He mentions topology on one page. He doesn't do formal measure theory nor full Lebesgue integration but ... full review(30) -

This is a very well written book, with an ample number of exercises of varying difficulty. I wouldn't say it reads like a novel. Few math books do. But it isn't so far away from that. The only reason I give it 4 stars rather than 5 (actually, my rating is more like 4.5 stars than 4, but I can't rate it that way), is that there are several spots where a few more words would have made things clearer instead of saying by theorem so and so this is true. Bottom line: the book is very good and is well worth the money. In fact, it is worth more! Good job authors!(17) -

This book is ideal for self study. It has complete solutions to all the exercises in the book. A very good introduction to real analysis. Basic calculus is all that is needed to understand the book. Stirling's approximation, Gamma and Beta functions are some of the topics in the book that are not generally found in a book at this level. This is an elementary book - but rigorous, in my opinion. If you want to get started in analysis this book would be an ideal place to start. And given the current price of the book, it is a steal. There are some typos but none too serious.(8) -

For $[...] you will get an unbelievably clear explanation of metric spaces, continuous functions, differentiation and Riemann integration. This text is a tremendous accompaniment to Baby Rudin (this book along with Apostol's Mathematical Analysis (buy it used) will take you over the hump in a real analysis class using Rudin). Also, Rosenlicht taught at a time when real analysis was presented using diagrams - a pedagogical tool that has fallen out of some favor. While not numerous, the diagrams presented are very helpful in describing the concept (e.g., connectivity, the nested set property...). I found these to be invaluable. The writing is clear and the proofs are straightforward. The extremely useful information in this book will set you back around 6 cents per page - do the math on some other texts and you will see what a bargain this book is.(44) -

Once in a while, a book comes along that is so wonderfully written, the reader reflexively searches for other books by its author. Understanding Analysis is a prime example of this rare breed (Unfortunately, this is Abbott's only book as far as I know: write more!).
Undergraduates often begin analysis courses with dread and finish in a state of utter confusion, knowing the definitions of key phrases, and sometimes even being able to supply proofs for some elementary results, but having no intution as to why the main theorems are pertinent.
But it does not have to be so. 'Understanding Analysis' has the distinction of being so readable, it is sometimes difficult to pry oneself away from its pages and attempt the exercises. On multiple occasions I found myself skimming through the book and reading the various 'special topics' (e.g. Cantor Sets, Integration, Fourier Series) interspersed throughout the book ... full review(84) -

Price: $99.99 "Fun book (but not for beginners)" - By John W.
I used this book for a graduate level analysis class.
I had taken two semesters of undergrad analysis before using this book.
This is a great book. But not for people who are learning the material (as in not for people who have never taken an analysis course). A lot is left for the reader to fill in. For me, this was extremely helpful. Rather than tell me every detail of a proof, Rudin allowed me to develop a much stronger understanding of the content- by examining an argument more closely than I would if the proof was 'dumbed down'.
Work through his proofs, fill in detail where he leaves it out. Understand his arguments and the motivation.
Do this and you will have as much fun as I did.
A bit of a heads up to people who will be using ... full review(183) -

This is the first course in Real Analysis. The book starts with set theory, includes point set topology, theory behind differentiation and Riemann integration, functional spaces, multivariable calculus, and ends with a chapter on Lebesgue integration. The chapter on point set topology is so much better than what you find in Rudin. Even chapters on multivariable calculus and Lebesgue integration are better explained than in Rudin. This author stresses on intuition and has lots of diagrams that makes this text quite different from other books on basic real analysis.(7) -

This book pretty much copies the Real Analysis part of the Open University's excellent course 'Into to Pure Mathematics' which also covered Group Theory and Linear Algebra . If you're new to Analysis I cannot more highly recommend another book, though I would also recommend Spivak's Calculus which is at the same level, and pretty much covers the same material. I did the course (and have the book) and found it a breeze, all due to the excellently presented material, and the many examples, where like the SUMS books (of which I recommend most), all answers are givern in detail; which is important when you start more advanced maths (sic) and especially when you're teaching yourself! However it is only an introduction, but will prepare you for more advanced Analysis books like Rudin, Royden and my new favourite Knapp and his 2 Real Analysis books. Personally I wish they ... full review(3) -

List Price: $22.95 Price: $17.40 You Save: $5.55 (24%) "The Best I've found on Real Variables." - By Villa Adoquino
Let us start by saying that Real Variables is not going to be an easy topic. (Like saying that Schramm's book is a very bad book, but all of the others are so much worse, to paraphrase Churchill.). If you grabbed a bunch of books on Real variables and read them side by side. like I did, this would be the one that you will finish reading first as you lay the others aside for later reading. One reason is the learning curve which is not particularly steep, but it is monotonic, closed, and bounded. Unlike other Real Variable texts, this one is about Proof Building. Part One lays the foundation with Proof Building Methodology.
Part Two is ostensibly about the Real Number System, the centerpiece of which is "The Big Theorem", a set of nine theorms which mutually prove each other. Though Schramm does not give all ... full review(15) -
"Excellent problems and diagrams -- great book" - By Jesse Taylor (North Idaho)
This is an excellent introductory text on real analysis. It is very approachable, and he does a very good job at supplementing the traditional "definition-theorem-proof" style with intuitive explanations and wonderfully descriptive diagrams (the diagrams are one of the strongest points of this book -- and are something that are sadly left out of many otherwise good books on analysis).
My only (minor) complaint is with the layout/formatting of the book -- it is very jumbled together, the typesetting is poor, and it looks like it was printed on a low-resolution $10 printer.
Other than that, it is an excellent companion to a more in-depth/advanced treatment. As far as more "advanced" books go, I would recommend -- Apostol's "Mathematical Analysis" and/or Shilov's "Real and Complex Analysis" -- both of which are incredibly well written and informative.(26) -
