"Very good book" - by J. Horst (Columbus, OH USA)
If you've ever wanted to know the difference between Art Nouveau and Modernism (for example) this book will help you understand it, and provide you with notable examples of each. And many, many more of the styles and -isms of the last 100 years.

Yes, I read every page. Carefully. Sometime soon I will do it again.

"I have always loved midcentury architecture" - by Carol K.
As a midcentury person, I have always loved midcentury architecture. I lived near an Eichler neighbor hood and would take the side streets just to see them. Living in Evanston, IL I loved driving Sheridan Road thru “the ravines” to see Ferris Beuhler style homes.
I loved that the Intro pages highlighted my home town of Park a Forest, IL. In high school I never knew Ethne to have a green thumb but when she moved to England she found her calling. She has studied all styles of gardens for her books and you can tell she knows what she is showing and talking about.
I am going to love reading the rest of the book. And looking at all the pictures again and again.
It’s a lovely, fun,

"Colquhoun is one of the most significant architectural theorist and ..." - by Robert J. Luchetti (Somerville MA USA)
Colquhoun is one of the most significant architectural theorist and historians of his generation. His interpretation of modern architecture post dates the usual references which gives us a fresh and creative take on the subject. His role as a practicing architect also informs his insight, which is unique for an historical survey of this type. He knows what it takes to actually design and build a building, which distinguishes him from his peers.

"beautiful photographic documentation of each project" - by Adam Yarinsky (New York, NY USA)
Architecture is fundamentally relational; its significance emanates from its engagement with the world. This includes its physical context, or site; its social context, or program; and its material context, or construction. Cutting across all of these broad categories is architecture’s relationship to time at every increment of experience: from the momentary duration of the body moving in space to the tracking of the sun across the sky to the weathering of materials to the evolution of forms in response to climatic and cultural conditions. Marc Kristal’s engaging book elaborates on the implications of these manifold relationships through the lens of domestic space which is explicitly conceived as a bridge between past and present. For him, new and old constitute a totality in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Framed by a highly readable yet erudite introduction, Kristal demonstrates the vitality of his proposition through ... full review

"Great little book!" - by EcoDesigner (Traveler)
For what it is, I think this is a very good book. It's not meant to teach 5 years worth of architectural studies in 15 minutes, or to be a conclusive guide. But it gives an excellent overview, some poignant points, and is especially helpful for non-architects to gain a clearer picture of what architecture is and how architect's think. (No, we don't just "draw blueprints," and we definitely don't "build houses.")

I wasn't sure what to think when I saw the mixed reviews, and some pretty heavy criticism. But as an architect myself, I think it's a very cool little book. I wish my friends would read it. I'm interested in buying the other books (Business, Culinary School, Film, etc.).

"Fabulous houses!" - by Paul Mastin (Fort Worth, Texas)
If you enjoy modern residential architecture, you will love Steve Huyton's book Modern Masters: Contemporary Architecture from Around the World. I love these houses. They rate over the top on the "cool" factor, are very photogenic, and stretch the perception of what a home should look like.

Focusing on a handful of design firms from around the world, Huyton gives a paragraph or so of description before the displays of interior and exterior shots. The predominant theme, as you might expect, is boxy and angular, concrete and glass. Some of the houses are really fabulous looking.

But this book leaves so many questions unanswered.

1. How much do these dwellings cost? Well, if you have to ask, you can't afford it. He doesn't discuss price at all, but I'm confident that the price per square foot is well above any house of traditional design.

2. Where do you ... full review
