I just got back from walking the Camino de Santiago and found this book from a review in The New Yorker. I read the sample chapter and was hooked! I just wish that I'd read it before embarking on my 500 mile/35 day walk! It isn't even about the Camino - instead it is about every walk or trail... for anyone that enjoys walking... whether you are an armchair adventurer or a global wanderer, this is a magical book about the philosophy, magic, myths, geology, and history of walking your Way.(99) -
"Wow!" - By ebaf
My 12 year old son is a fan of Gary Paulsen and gave me this book to read. If you are a dog lover, nature lover, or have an interest in Alaskan sled dog racing, read this! If you read his other book "My LIfe In Dog Years" first, you will definitely have a tough time reading about his beloved dogs without crying!
I would recommend his books to young readers, as well as adults.(208) -

List Price: $15.99 Price: $12.27 You Save: $3.72 (23%) "The Impossible Rescue" - By Amazon Customer (Texas)
This is one of my favorite books. It shows the endurance and perseverance of the American people. Who would have tried to rescue these people by putting their very lives at risk? Everything had to be just right, i.e. the weather, the food supply, as well as the cooperation of others met along the route. Everyone had to be willing to risk all and do their part for these people to be rescued. It is an easy read for not only adults, but also for children from about 12 years old and up..(66) -

Price: $12.99 "On to Iraq" - By M. L. Dominguez-Plaza (Des Moines, WA)
I have just passed the book, The Forgotten 500, on to my son in Iraq. What a terrific read and one I know that he and his fellow soldiers will enjoy. I cried, laughed and got very angery as I read this book. Those Airmen and the civilians who helped them return to their homes should never be forgotten. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in WWII history.(1,110) -

Exciting adventure! I read this story, I'm guessing 50 or so years ago and never forgot it. When my son was young I tried to find it at our local library, but was unsuccessful, even with the librarian calling other libraries. Of course this was before the age of computers, too. I read in the newspaper that Donn Fender had passed on (yes, read on paper, not internet). This led me to check Amazon for the book.(161) -

List Price: $16.95 Price: $10.09 You Save: $6.86 (40%) "Amazon Ace Explorer" - By Mapchief Dave (Springfield, IL)
I read this on my daughter's recommendation and enjoyed it throughout. I was pleased at how quickly I was drawn in by the idea of searching for a lost city in South America. The details of the story that the author pieced together took patience and persistence for which I envy him. Often books like this get over-burdened by these details. I sometimes skip ahead by paragraphs or even chapters when the going gets slow...was not the case with this book.
The writer really brings forward the state of our world's civilization during the period (1920's)...the inhumanity suffered upon the natives of the continent for the sake of latex, particularly, and other commodities. Although boastful, Percy Fawcett, the main explorer in the book was quite understanding of the natives and did much to further understanding of them and their languages. He would be a person that would probably keep ... full review(937) -

List Price: $16.95 Price: $11.72 You Save: $5.23 (31%) "Is a fantastic story of endurance and perseverance from these men especially ..." - By Jim
One of the most interesting books I have read. For two entire winters with no possibility of rescue where the worlds most severe weather occurs. Winds quite often strong as 60- 100mph and temperatures common to be 30 plus below zero. Is a fantastic story of endurance and perseverance from these men especially when knowing of the much lesser quality of food, clothing and equipment used for exploring in1913 compared to the much more advanced available today. Is difficult to imagine walking several hundred miles pulling sledges weighing 300 pounds over crevices, up ice hills and snow drifts. I seldom read a book a second time but with this is one I likely will. Only drawback is several terms used in that time period are not familiar to the average reader and the author could have done a little better with explanations of what exactly ... full review(147) -

List Price: $27.99 Price: $17.23 You Save: $10.76 (38%) "AN EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURE -- SHOULD BE A MOVIE!" - By Jack Frost East
The Russian connection will get the headlines, but former CIA officer Reynolds's deeply researched narrative (he also is an Oxford PHD and former field historian for the Marine Corps) spans fascinating terrain on its own right: war, revolution, espionage, literature -- all through he lens of Ernest Hemingway. He is the first to pull the many strands of Hemingway's "secret adventures" together. There are a dozen great set-piece tales here, my favorite being those in Cuba and in France during liberation of Europe. Reynolds is always careful not to overstep his sources, which may frustrate some who want easy answers but which evidences his serious scholarship. A great read and an important new perspective. Also valuable for showing the Russian intelligence operation at work.(47) -

List Price: $16.00 Price: $10.76 You Save: $5.24 (33%) "... books written about the 1967 climbing tragedy and the best in my mind" - By P. Schlichter (Colorado)
Denali's Howl is one of four books written about the 1967 climbing tragedy and the best in my mind. The author is a writer by profession and is intimately familiar with Alaska and Denali. He had access to his father's recordings of radio messages which lent credence to his analysis.
The book was especially meaningful to me because I was one of the four who summited the mountain and was fortunate to survive the deadly weather. I was there and I can attest to the value of Andy Hall's well written book.(148) -

I love Janette Riehle's books, and can't wait for the next one. She has written beautifully about her family growing up in the wilderness. Her children are amazing, and it is very kind to share the story of their lives for us to enjoy. Thank you!!(54) -

Price: $2.99 "My adventures pale in comparison to the authors." - By P J Whittlesea
Fantastic book!
I have travelled widely, but my adventures pale in comparison to the authors. How she managed to get into so many weird and wonderful situations, I don't know. I have never laughed so much whilst reading a travel book.
Somehow reminiscent of the Bill Bryson's travelogues.
Thoroughly enjoyable read.(17) -
