"Omaha Beach" - By Amazon Customer (Texas)
What an amazing account of the cost of Omaha beach. Mr. Balkoski has done a wonderful work in using the accounts of the people who were there, to hear them talk of the slaughter so many didn't survive is chilling. I didn't realize so much of the assault went wrong from the beginning, it is a miracle it succeeded at all. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the kindle version doesn't reproduce the maps clear enough to read easily. Wonderful book! You won't regret this purchase.

"this book will be the closest you will get to seeing what Omaha Beach looked like today and back on 6 June 1944" - By lordhoot (Anchorage, Alaska USA)
For most of us who may never get to France, this book will be the closest you will get to seeing what Omaha Beach looked like today and back on 6 June 1944. The book is well written and its well illustrated with maps, photos and drawings of what it looked like to the men who landed and what it looks like today as the ruins of German fortifications still remains. Its give a clear, simple understanding of what happened on Omaha Beach that day and it is written with clarity. And as the book suggested, it is a field guide to places in and around Omaha Beach. I would presume that it would be a useful guide to anyone traveling there in person. I haven't been there so I'll reserved my judgment on that note.

Only downside it the price. It cost me $36.00 at Barnes and Nobles ... full review

"Bob Capa's D-Day June 6, 1944/Omaha Beach images faithfully and artistically honored!" - By M. S. Brown (Oak Hill, Tx.)
This is a fine, modern treatment of Robert Capa's uniquely historic D-Day photos since he was the only combat photographer who landed with the first wave units on Omaha Beach. This modest sized and priced publication includes Capa's original images plus very fine graphic novel type artwork. Most of his exposed invasion rolls of film was ruined by a technician in Life Magazine's London photo lab later that day. Therefore in my opinion the artistic treatment herein is a superb approach to fulfilling how the murderous beach action may actually have appeared and been experienced by the amphibious forces landed with Capa that June morning.

"It's a contribution to the literature of D-Day that's worth reading" - By James K. Craig (Fort Worth, TX, USA)
Thousands of books have been written about the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 and it’s hard to imagine the need for another one, but Professor Yagil Henkin has managed to write an interesting guidebook, but a valuable contribution to the literature of the battle. In his 150 page self-guided tour book, Professor Henkin takes a new look at the battle by closely focusing on one small, critical part of the large battlefield, the Easy Red area on Omaha Beach. With the keen eye of the professional military historian, Dr. Henkin explains unit movements in the context of the larger battle, as well as the story of “Easy Red” in the words of some of the men who made history there.
While he puts Operation Overlord in political and military context, Dr. Henkin makes no pretense of writing a comprehensive history of the war or the campaign, although ... full review

"Indispensible data for D-Day historians" - By Arthur Van Pelt (Tampa FL)
As one who has done research on Omaha beach landings with respect to casualties,
which demonstrated how severely Saving Private Ryan had distorted history, I
was happy to read Lewis' book with respect to the planning involved. The
inescapable conclusion is that the higher echelons of Allied command were
close to incompetent. This doesn't contradict much of what has been written
by various other WWII historians. If WWI commanders were dunderheads (which they
were), then WWII didn't show very much improvement, except that the commanders
were concerned about casualties in ways that their WWI counterparts never were.
The principle protagonists in the Omaha Beach debacle were Ike, Monty, Brad, Gerow,
Huebner and Hall and a few others. Gerow comes across as the only one who possessed
any sense of reality and worked to correct the many flaws in the battle plan. Monty
comes across, as usual, as a mediocre thinker ... full review

"A vivid visual look at a famous battle" - By Bruce Trinque (Amston, CT United States)
Not long ago, I read and reviewed Joseph Balkoski's "Omaha Beach" and somewhat lamented the absence of really adequate maps to better show what had happened, linking the small unit actions with the bigger picture. I must say tha Georges Bernage's book is the perfect companion to Balkoski's, supplying highly vivid maps and photographs to amplify the words of Balkoski's narrative. And it certainly is not necessary to read Balkoski's book to find Bernage's much more visually-oriented work valuable in itself. A detailed picture of German tactical arrangements is presented along with equally detailed portrayals of individual American attacks bypassing and overcoming those defenses. And Bernage's text should not be ignored, as it contains some excellent first-hand account material.

"A great recouunting of history from the "greatest generation"" - By Charles B. Faulconer (Lynchburg, VA)
Bob Slaughter has captured a piece of history in a unique and fascinating manner. His recounting of personal and historical events surroundnig one of the defining events of modern time is not only a good documentary but entertaining. Knowing him as a fellow "Stonewall Brigade" member adds even more interest from my perspective. He tells the story from a real life perspective ... how it really was then and what it took to succeed in the mission. Reading this book will certainly give you a great view of what the men and women went through to win the war. He pulls no punches in revealing some mistakes made in planning and execution at every level. Anyone who thinks "freedom is free" should read this to learn the real "cost of freedom."

"Well - crafted history about D-day" - By Amazon Customer (Buena Vista, VA USA)
A satisfying book, but as I told my grandson when he asked what it was about, I realized that without the context of historical knowledge, the casual reader would be a bit lost. I recommend reading another general history of D-day (such as The Longest Day) to lay some groundwork for Mr Stearns's excellent exposition. A puzzle indeed!

"Omaha Beach" - By P. Temple (Spring, TX, US)
Loved it! The writing was beautiful. I could almost see, feel and even smell what the author was describing. Some of the "Gotcha" endings are such a surprise I found myself thinking about them for days. And, while the poem at the beginning of the book makes me cry, I love it so much I read it over and over again. I can't wait to see what Ms. Jeffrey writes next.

"Omaha from a different view" - By Scott Bailey
Well written book with great chapter discussing each area of beach defense. This book tells all the effort the Germans put into their beach defense. From troops to beach obstacles are discussed. Great pictures and drawing of different obstacles are shown. The reader will find out why so many casualties were incurred at this beach when German defenses were at there strongest.

"Military Intelligence" - By M. Burroughs (San Antonio TX)
Although I have not yet had a chance to read this book completely, which was a Christmas gift, I have scanned and browsed it and am impressed, as always, with the quality of materials that National Geographic publishes. With a background in military intelligence, I naturally tend to be drawn to this genre of military history, which too often takes a back seat to more dramatic aspects of war. But intelligence--human and electronic--is, and always has been, vital to the success of military campaigns and, ultimately, entire wars themselves. I have read other books by Stephen Hyslop and have found them all to be first-rate.
