Larry Ullman in his PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites: Visual QuickPro Guide (4th Edition) provides a well written and very detailed tutorial about how to create dynamic web pages by effectively combining PHP and MySQL. This book provides the basic knowledge of dynamic web site creation presented in an easy-to-understand, quick-to-learn, easy-to-retain style. Moreover, Larry presents the information with relevant examples which can later be used as a toolbox of reusable code for web site developers, a *huge* value-add. The crescendo of his masterpiece is the final chapter which walks the reader through creating a basic e-commerce site.

After searching for basic primers on PHP and MySQL, I settled on this book due to the many positive reviews. I'm glad that I did, as I now have a basic understanding of how to use these two technologies to build a web site.
Make no mistake, unless you have previous experience, this book is only a beginning. I can tell that it will take many more hours of work before I am able to implement these concepts. However, I can now look at existing code and understand what it is doing "behind the scenes." I also feel confident that I could modify existing code to meet my needs.

I am using this book for a course I'm taking. I had already read about 1/2 of the book before the class even started and am now about 2/3 of the way through it with the course just starting! It's a very enjoyable read. The author succeeds in teaching you the fundamentals and also giving you a sense that you can be a successful PHP programmer. I suggest using the Kindle Matchbook program as I did. I bought the paperback and got the Kindle edition for free. The author has a YouTube video walking you through code that's in the book and also has a dedicated web site where you can find source code for the book. Highly recommended.(97) -

I have wanted to broaden my knowledge of general programming, PHP, and MYSQL for some time. I have read a couple of books on the subject, but they were too complicated and over my head. I recently purchased the book “Easy PHP”. This book made PHP and MYSQL so much easier to understand. I love the charts and step by step depictions. I am a visual learner and need to see each step of a process. The book walks you through various installations, definitions, and processes so that it’s simple to grasp. I feel that I am much better prepared to pursue my understanding of this topic and finally have a solid base to build upon. I highly recommend this book and I know it is going to help a lot of people just like me.(40) -

This is an excellent language tutorial and reference on PHP. I'm a big fan of all of Murach's books and this one is no exception. As a C# developer, I needed a book that would clear up the sometimes confusing syntax of PHP without requiring me to wade through a lot of concepts I already understood. This book does exactly that. Murach's unique style of putting explanations on each left page and corresponding examples on each right page is ingeniously simple yet amazingly effective. I frequently scan the sample page first and only read the explanation page when I need further clarification. However the explanation page is always there if you need it. The result is a very fast read. Also, the editing is superb. So far, I haven't encountered any errors in the sample source. Excellent book.(103) -

My dad is a programmer and I asked him how can I learn so he quickly pointed me to this book said before he could show me I needed to at least have some background. And this book was very informative. Very easy to read and follow even if you have no other teachings in this field. We are now going to start working on making apps and I feel like this book has been great for beginners.(14) -

Whimsical, informative, humorous. As a Windows / PC based application developer for 30 years I have found this to be a good introductory and enjoyable approach to the non-Windows world of development. Most of my work has been with the unsung hard working end user, ordinary folks like most of us who do their work and go home to do other things. People who need to learn but don't want to be talked down to. In a similar way, this book introduces basic concepts in an un-snobbish, non-condescending way to someone less than sophisticated in this area of interest.
It's like having fun without the guilt of doing nothing useful. And it's a good start on this subject, maybe even for serious students.(102) -

This book is an excellent tutorial for someone who already knows how to program and wants to learn PHP and MySQL. It describes many of the callable functions available in the language, but it tells you to go to the PHO web site for a complete list of all the functions and features. The reason I bought a book is so that I can have the book open in front of me and not have to jump back and forth to the web site to look stuff up.(52) -

You may say it’s impossible to learn how to build a web application in two hours but this book made it possible for me. Well, I was not able to do it perfectly but it was a good start. I would say, this book is truly a beginner’s choice. The instructions and steps given were easy to follow and understand. Two things, I really liked about this book are:
-It clearly explained the relationship between PHP, MYSQL and other webservers like Apache and IIS , this is very simple yet I always get confused by it all the time and this is the only time I was able to truly understand their connection.
-It showed how to configure Apache,PHP and MYSQL , which other beginner’s books sometimes miss.
Learn something new in a short span of time, start with the basics, this book can help you out.(4) -

I was recently asked to evaluate web development options for a start up and needed to get my head around modern PHP. This book was one of the books I purchased for that purpose. No book is perfect and this book has gaps, but it is something I would recommend to those wanting to get into PHP. The utility probably declines for experienced PHP programers, but there could still be some gems. I also purchased and reviewed [[ASIN:1491918667 Learning PHP, MySQL & JavaScript: With jQuery, CSS & HTML5 (Learning Php, Mysql, Javascript, Css & Html5)]]. Lockhart's book (Modern PHP) goes along way towards addressing my views on the short comings of Nixon's tomb on web technologies (also a good book). There are areas that could be improved in Modern PHP. The appendix on frameworks is a bit light in my opinion and would benefit ... full review(45)
