The format is clean, clear, useful. Short but instantly-understandable titles are followed by a couple sentences painting the situation in which the advice is useful - and rationale for why it is good to follow the advice. "The single most important ingredient is theme." "Remind yourself - you're not the audience." "The idea that people sell as if they are selling to themselves also applies to presenting." Nancy Duartes follows up her wonderful presentations books slide:ology and resonate with this HBR handbook in how to make and deliver the presentations. The book follow the full chain from creating your ideas to how to the follow up on the talk. I especially enjoyed the last part, the delivery, which for me was 'most new', since I have read the other books. For the other parts I prefer the two individual books, maybe not least since they are more visually appealing. The HBR format do make this book a little dull compared to the other books. The text is on the other hand, as always, interesting and has a good flow.
If you are interested in only one book about presentations, then this is the perfect option (maybe with a reservation for the graphical format). If you are interested in more books, you should complement with Nancy's previous boooks.(97) -

I have to lead my first ever 2 hour workshop next month- while a 2 hour workshop pales in comparison to the kind of training Jolles prepares his readers for (all day, all week), there is SO much I can use and apply here, especially since I want to do more speaking engagements. I feel so much better after reading this and having a structure (UPPOPPR, baby!) to work from. I'm now actually looking forward to my workshop.(29) -

This book came recommended from three different sources I trust. Glad I took the recommendation and have seen better responses to the visuals and presentations. Now when I see really bad, not report / not presentation, PowerPoint docs I reconsider the credibility of the presenter. Simplicity in design is proven more effective, yet in the name of professionalism dull, un readable text is judged the standard. An impactful presentation takes some thought and Presentation Zen provides some points for consideration. Anyone who has to make a point or lead a discussion would do well to practice the concepts presented.(175) -

I think this is one of the best books on presentations. Why? Because so many other books offer complex advice that the average presenter simply can't do. Everything from how to move, how to breath, how to act. You have to have two minds to do any of it - one to remember what you're supposed to do and the other to actually speak. It's like juggling multiple balls and deciding you need to brush your teeth at the same time. Impossible.
