"The book for a serious student of mathematics" - By davez (LA, CA, United States)
This is the book for a serious student to begin his study of analysis. This is Hardy's timeless masterpiece. There is no other Calculus book even remotely close. The collection of the problems in this book is superb. After you wade through this book, your command of Calculus will be unshakable and your whole view of mathematics could also alter. Hardy made it clear in the preface, "It is in any case a book for mathematicians: I have nowhere made any attempt to meet the needs of students of engineering or indeed any class of students whose interests are not primarily mathematical."

This is one of few math and science books that are a joy to read even after you have mastered the material. What Hardy does for mathematics in this book is what Feynman does for physics in Lectures of Physics.

"A truly elegant work" - By Hans U. Widmaier (Elmhurst, IL USA)
This book is a classic, and deservedly so. It is comprehensive but not overloaded (like so many modern textbooks), crystal clear, well organized, rigorous. A wonderful text for teaching yourself higher math, which is how I am using it. But there is something beyond its didactic effectiveness that makes Hardy's work a must-have for anyone interested in math: This is a truly beautiful book, and working through it, while by no means easy, is an intellectual and aesthetic delight of the first order. Hardy is a genuinely elegant, subtle, incisive thinker, and his unbounded enthusiasm for his subject, duly controlled by British understatement, shines through every page. He conveys the irresistible, almost addictive quality of math.

"Nicely-written transition from high school to college mathematics. Targeted more toward classroom use than self-study" - By One-Reader
This is a review of the (2005) 2nd ed. The number of texts covering the transition from secondary school to college mathematics has grown considerably in recent years. This is one of the better-written and well-organized texts. Its greatest concentration is on important concepts from pure mathematics, such as sets and numbers, real and complex, and some interesting topics from number theory. Explanations are clear and the in-text examples and proofs are well chosen and explained. The emphasis here is primarily on proofs rather than on the solution of applied problems. The author uses only the minimum level of mathematical rigor required, and this is supplemented by clear discussions. I enjoyed the gentle introduction to set theory and the in-text questions, followed by solutions. The proofs of propositions are clear and complete.

"From a teacher's perspective" - By Leib Gershon Mitchell (Oak Park, MI)
I am writing this review from the perspective of a teacher.(I use it in my class of international students. Thank God that math is the same in every language.)

    Bad points:

    1. This book has *lots* of mistakes in the worked problems. And these problems are not simple enough that correcting the mistakes doesn't take that much time. Mistakes average about 1 per subsection. Some of this material is so fancy that the students have a hard time getting it, and it does not help trying to go back through and demonstrate why the book is wrong for students who don't have that great of a grasp on the material to begin with.

    2. There are also no errata anywhere on the internet against which I could verify the problems that I have found to be wrong are, in fact, wrong and have been found by others ... full review

"This book is adorable!" - By W
My five-year-old really enjoys reading this, even though she doesn't understand the math. It's an alphabet story - X has very few friends, but F shows X that when they play together as f(x) they can meet all the letters of the alphabet! Each letter and term is accompanied by the appropriate graph (*a*bsolute value, *e*xponential, *p*arabolic, etc.) on through the alphabet. At the end X has lots of friends.

"A good English text" - By Andrew J. Kelley (Colorado)
This is an English text from the Cambridge University Press which, according to the preface, covers "those parts of modern `A' level pure mathematics syllabuses not normally included in standard calculus texts." From the short time I've owned this book, it seems quite good, as it contains much more interesting and challenging problems than a regular pre-calc text. I found it recommended in the book, The Mathematical Olympiad Handbook: An Introduction to Problem Solving Based on the First 32 British Mathematical Olympiads 1965-1996 (Oxford Science Publications) by A. Gardiner. If you want to read Hardy's classic book by the same title, this could be an excellent companion/prerequisite material.

"THe Mathematics of General Relativity" - By Kindle Customer (Suwanee, GA, USA)
The authors present a thorough development of TENSOR CALCULUS, from basic principals, such as ordinary three dimensional vector space. Tensors are generalizations of vectors to any number of dimensions (vectors are type (1,0) tensors, diff. forms are type (0,1) tensors). One of the key principles of General Relativity is that if physical laws are expressed in tensor form, then they are independent of local coordinate systems, and valid everywhere.

"The key to understanding higher mathematics" - By Mitchel J. Haas (Midwest USA)
First I'd like to say that I purchased this book for self study. I studied math in college many years ago, and always got good grades in math. I recently decided to re-study many of my previous courses, this time using the best of the best textbooks for each of the subjects. My original plan was to start with Calculus using both the Apostol and Spivak textbooks. These textbooks are very thorough, and it soon became apparent that there were gaps in my understanding of core concepts in logic, proofs, axioms, set theory, series, and probability. I purchased two very good textbooks in learning and performing proofs, which greatly improved my understanding in logic, set theory and proofs. They did still leave some gaps though, since they assumed I had a very good understanding of core axioms and other mathematical concepts. This is ... full review

It's a good book but it would be better if it had better examples of the problems.
