Terrific selections, including many that were new to me. It really pays off to have a poet (and one with such a great feeling for children) select the material, from a publisher with the resources of Random House. I usually buy a poetry collection as a first- or second - Christmas present for my many grandnieces and -nephews. I failed to take the advice in my headline, probably because I did not read the PW recommendation all the way through, I'll probably select another book for this year's intended recipient, and save this one to give to about a first grader.(112) -

We've been thumbing through fairy tale collections in bookstores and reading reviews online. We were looking for a collection of classic fairy tales that our homeschooled Kindergartener should be familiar with. We found just that in this book. The illustrations are beautiful, the stories are all well-known and the versions chosen are perfect. We read one fairy tale on Monday, review and do an activity on Wednesday and watch the story on Fairy Tale Theatre DVDs on Friday. He loves this routine and looks forward to a new story each week. Highly recommend this specific collection for your child's library!(39) -

LOVE this coloring book! This is for anyone who grew up in the 90s and wants some major nostalgia! The pages are thick and one sided with character quotes on the reverse side. Markers work great! The book offers such a wide variety of TV shows including Rugrats, Wild Thornberrys, Rockos Modern World, Ahh! Real Monsters, Rocket Power, Catdog, Angry Beavers, and Hey Arnold.
The only slight issue is the pages are prefrerated and come out somewhat easily. I finished coloring a page in markers and the next time I opened the book, the page fell out. This was a minor issue for me, but something worth noting. The pictures are a few of my favorites!(103) -

Wow!!! This has been a gigantic hit for my 7 year old! She literally carries the box around the house, brings it in the car everywhere we go, and is reading nonstop (and she isn't one to just pick up a book and read). In first grade, she and her friends were introduced to these books and love them. The level is perfect for 6 and 7 year olds who are reading.
My son, who just turned 9, likes more advanced chapter books now but probably would have liked them in his early 8's too. Because she is so into them, he is becoming more interested in them too.(299) -

I really wanted to learn Sign Language so I got this book, it is a little hard to understand and all of the information and the way the book is set up can be a bit overwhelming, but it does it's job. Also, my book came a little damaged, but nothing to bad.

According to the Random House Puzzle Meter, we do "Medium" level puzzles (no easy feat, this) and this book is a tremendous help for those of us who function as mediums. We even remember half the stuff we look up! OK. Maybe a quarter because we keep going back for more...

I was enrolled in ASL III at the University I'm attending. This book instantly became one of my favorite books. It is very easy to use and offers multiple signs per word. The descriptions are very detailed, so that if you've only seen a sign once, you instantly recall how to sign it. The descriptions also make it possible to figure out how to signs signs you haven't seen before. I am very impressed with this book and it has helped me tremendously with my studies in American Sign Language. I highly recommend this book!(42) -
