"From all the bad reviews since it's release" - By ann c.
Yes, I actually gave it 5-stars... From all the bad reviews since it's release, I expected it to be trite, predictable & an immeasurably long walk from the book, shamefully well beneath these seasoned actors abilities & worst of all, boring.... I only viewed it because it was a free nubie & more importantly, I am a New Yorker transplanted in NC in a popular town for thru-hikers on the AT. In fact I shuttle them from time to time when the main, local shuttles have overflow. So, it was out of familiarity & curiosity of sorts I felt compelled to view & fully prepared to hate it. Well I didn't hate it, I found myself laughing... a lot. I was happily surprised with Redford's dead-on delivery of Brysons dry wit. Nolty always delivers so no surprise there but I was still impressed... ... full review(13,343) -
"Catch Me If You Can, Weathermen!" - By Thomas Ricks (PA, USA)
The 1960s were wild and daring times for some our generation - some more than others. Redford stars in this film as well as directs it with a hero (Nick Nolte and a heroine (Julis Christie) of that era to tell the story of the famous/infamous Weathermen. The underground group was anti-Vietnam war that went beyond clinched fists of the Black Panthers, protest marches of the SDS or college student on campus demonstrations. The Weathermen took up bombs, targeted burnings, and fled capture mainly to Canada while some were caught by the FBI, a number of them were not caught for years until they just got tired of running and gave themselves up to the law authorities. The film is about the ones who were still underground with code names and secret passwords sprinkled around the States as college profs, handymen, or housewives living out their lives in suburbs and ... full review(365) -
"Over looked classic film finally gets a top notch transfer for high def release on Blu-ray" - By Wayne Klein (My Little Blue Window, USA)
One of six movies that the late Sidney Pollack made with Robert Redford, "Jeremiah Johnson" was promised on Blu-ray quite some time back. I suspect the delay had more to do with either restoring the film or finding a good print of the movie to present on Blu-ray. Either way, this forgotten classic has finally arrived with a nice looking transfer and a couple of nice extras.
The title character (Redford) elects to abandon civilization and takes to the isolation of the Rocky Mountains to carve out a new and largely solo life for himself. Johnson struggles to survive in the wilderness until he meets a grizzled trapper (the late Will Geer)who teaches him many of the skills to survive. Johnson unexpectedly with a wife and young boy after a series of adventures.
"Jeremiah Johnson" has always looked somewhat soft due largely to the choices when shooting the ... full review(1,468) -
"Loved this movie" - By Rick (Palmdale, CA)
Loved this movie, but it left me with a very insecure feeling about the future of our media's ability to bring important information to our attention. It also concerns me greatly about our politicians and their followers.ability to "shout down" the truth. I think this movie is a must see for all our citizens so that they become aware of the extreme need for investigative reporting, and what can happen when we allow the noisy minority to evade the errors of their "chosen" ones, who share their narrow political views. The acting was great too. It motivated me to buy the book and read it, twice!(439) -
"...I REALLY WANT TO GIVE IT 50 STARS!" - By P. J. Lancelotti (Olympia, Washington)
I AM A RETIRED (DISABLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY), STATE CORRECTIONAL PEACE OFFICER. I WORKED AS SUCH IN STATE PRISONS. SO I HAVE HAD MANY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE LIVING WHAT THIS MOVIE IS SHOWING. I GAVE THIS FILM 5 STARS, BUT I REALLY WANT TO GIVE IT 50! NOT ONLY WAS IT EXCITING AND ENTERTAINING, IT HELPED ME GREATLY AND PERSONALLY IN THAT I (THE OFFICER I WAS) TOO HAVE "DIED" (BECAME TOTALLY DISABLED) TRYING TO ENFORCE AND PROTECT HONESTY AND INTEGRITY THERE! WORKING WITH THE INMATES WAS NEVER A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR ME - BUT WHEN IT COMES TO WORKING UNDER CORRUPT OFFICIALS, THAT'S ANOTHER STORY. AND THAT STORY, WHICH I PERSONALLY LIVED THROUGH, WAS VIVIDLY PORTRAIED IN THIS FILM. I LIKE IT SO MUCH THAT I HAVE WATCHED IT 5 TIMES, AND AM LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCHING IT AGAIN. ... full review(298) -
"Excellent cloak-and-dagger drama with a top-notch cast (Robert Redford" - By Ronald M. Hatch
Excellent cloak-and-dagger drama with a top-notch cast (Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway, Max Von Sydow & Cliff Robertson), a backdrop of the all-too-real oil crisis and some fascinating 1970's retro-tech thrown in for good measure. Best quotable from the screenplay: Robertson (as CIA Spook Higgins), "What are people who've never known hunger going to do ... ? They won't care ... ; They'll just want us to get it for them!"(928) -
"Still a favorite movie of mine!" - By Susan E. Falk (Fargo, ND USA)
I rented this through Amazon Instant Video recently because I wanted to watch it with my daughter. I wasn't sure it would "stand the test of time and memory", but I'm pleased to say it passed the test with flying colors. I've always been a Redford fan, which was why I saw the movie in the first place when it came out. The movie blends drama and suspense with the right dose of humor to make the movie flow well.
I remember when seeing it the first time I was afraid it would with the weight of so many "big" names being in the same production. Not so with this cast of stars, and they do all manage to shine here in these performances.
Fact remains, it's still a great movie. Some of the tech may be dated, but that didn't give me pause or detract from enjoyment. ... full review(460) -
"This classic rendition of Dennison's home in Africa is beautiful and full of longing" - By Terra Nova (+40.69,-111.54)
This classic rendition of Dennison's home in Africa is beautiful and full of longing. Shooting, set and costumes are lovely. Meryl Streep is at the height of her powers. Redford is magnetic. The camera loves him.. and he knows it. But he becomes weirdly pasted-on-screen (like a male pin-up) when the writers slip him into soliloquies on marriage (hot-off the pop-presses running in 1985) masquerading as deep-thought. It is a minor but jarring failure in an otherwise extraordinary script and beautifully shot and directed film.(1,610) -
"the seminal modern political campaign drama" - By Robert J. Crawford (Balmette Talloires, France)
I saw this when it came out and was utterly riveted by it. It was the first political film I had ever seen and got me interested in politics, of which I became quite the junky. I believe this was one of the first films to attempt to create a realistic and subtle drama about the political process, at least in elections.
This time around, I got it for my kids. I admit that I watched it with some trepidation, hoping I would like it as much as I did the first time. Fortunately, it passed the test! We all became engrossed and discussed it afterwards, which was exactly what I hoped would happen.
One scary thing about the film, as my left-wing wife put it, is how little has changed - the US has scarcely moved on from the issues as presented ... full review(211) -
"Redford at his best" - By Romeo Quixote
Redford at his best, in a gripping prison drama, supported by a fantastic supporting cast, including Morgan Freeman in an early role, before he 'broke out' into mega-stardom. Gritty, well-acted, and well, well worth the purchase price.(167) -
"The CIA - An Inside look!" - By Bill E. (California, USA)
THE Movie:
If you like spy movies, this is a good movie to consider. Although the movie was made in 2001, It takes you back to the 70's and to many troubled places around the world. One minute you're in Honk Kong, then in divided Germany, the next, you're in Beirut at the time of the Lebanese civil war where a big part of the movie took place. It reminds us of the Berlin Wall and It shows some of the Palestinian people horrible living condition in refugee camps in Lebanon. It also shows the CIA involvement in Mideast assasinations.
Robert Redford is the main player in the movie. He appeared much older to me than one of his older spy movie (and one of my favorite) from 1975 " Three Days of the Condor". He also proved that he is still a great actor.
The movie ... full review(466) -
""The Way We Were", the Way to Go!" - By L. Saunders (ROCKFORD, IL, US)
The Way We Were keeps getting better and better with age!
Saw it as a young girl when it was first released. Now have
the DVD. Wish those deleted scenes had been included in
the film. Everytime I view it, I learn something new, see
something I had not seen before. The first time I saw it in
college I agreed with Redford's character. Then a few years
ago, I saw it a second time while recuperating from a severely
fractured leg and I agreed with Streisand's character. Now
seeing it a third time, I am now longer polarized and could
actually see their characters marrying in a sequel. Where's
my sequel?(821)
