"An all-time great programming guide!" - By Lawrence Baldwin (Seattle, WA USA)
I worked for many years as a professional programmer, and have been retired for a number of years. I have developed websites off and on for a number of years, initially directly coding in HTML and CSS and jQuery, and more recently using WordPress as a CMS.

Recently I have become interested in learning more current technologies for data-driven websites, and have explored a number of approaches, from Meteor to KnockoutJS to AngularJS to Python frameworks like Django and Flask. I did the Ruby on Rails tutorial on the RoR website, and liked what I saw a lot. After looking at reviews, I decided to buy this book from Amazon. I was particularly pleased that the new edition related to the (almost) latest versions of Ruby and Rails. I was also grateful to learn that the book was available online, making it easier to copy and paste code when ... full review

"Software Novice Entrepreneur - Must Read!" - By Rentable Inc - Stealth Mode
As an Entreprenuer of a recently shuttered startup I kick myself for not learning how to code and getting to a minimal vialbe product before I started pulling money out of my own pocket to do the real development. I could have saved a fortune, got much quicker customer feedback and pivoted faster to what I learned the market place was looking for. Unfortunately I took too long to get to that place and ran out of money.

Round Two - Serial Entrepreneur! I was committed not to make the same mistake twice. I found and tried multiple online training forums that had some decent information but they did not connect development to the real world of development, testing, and hosting online. Michael takes all the mystery out the end-2-end process from linux command line, git, remote git, containers and promoting to a public website. I don't ever expect ... full review

"One of the better places to start with Rails ..." - By grantmichaels (sarasota, fl)
I am reading this book at present, and agree w/ the "shelleyp" review completely. If you want to get started w/ Rails, this book is an excellent choice, even more so if you are already familiar with HTML/CSS. I also think it's great that they suggest using Heroku, which is a great way to get started w/ Rails!

While all of that is true, however, I can't help but suggest that new-to-Ruby coders look at Sinatra while they are learning Ruby, and grow their apps to Rails via their Rack commonality. Rails is great, but I think it is over-kill and at once overly complicated for the scope of the applications that many new developers are making while getting started. That being said, this is a phenomenal choice for getting started with Rails, and a refreshingly different angle for doing so.

"Highly recommended." - By J. Coombs (Ohio)
I really enjoyed this book. The author goes over many Linux lessons in addition to Ruby. In fact the first book is more of a preparation for the second book (which is free). There is a wealth of links and various sources to find additional information. It has a light writing style while still conveying the necessary information.
I've read several books like this and I have to say his one of the more enjoyable I've read.

"Elder's book is a step-by-step process of learning Ruby on ..." - By Jacky Reed
Elder's book is a step-by-step process of learning Ruby on Rails with ease! It doesn't go on tangent (although they will mention something to take out confusion) and wisp outs details that you don't necessarily need at that learning moment! I am interested in the Ruby code, but I feel as though learning the overview on Ruby on Rails may help learn the Ruby Code faster.

"Good introductory guide to building web applications using version 5 of the Ruby-language-based Rails framework" - By OnceMore
This book is a good introductory guide for novice developers who want to learn how to build web applications using version 5 of the Ruby-language-based Rails framework.

The first chapter covers development principles that opinionated Ruby- and Rails-adherents strongly believe in, but some may not totally agree with. The second chapter discusses what software to download and how to get them installed in a Windows, Mac, or Linux environment, and the third chapter provides a fast-paced tour of only the most essential of Ruby language concepts that Rails novice developers need to know in order to appreciate the framework. The remaining eight chapters then introduce readers to various capabilities of the framework, covering topics that range from Rails features that can be put to productive use, firstly, in development, followed by testing, and finally, production environments.

The pacing of the discussions in the last eight chapters are ... full review

"The best text ever, a must read" - By Jennifer Shea
Wow! Wow! Wow! seriously! There is only one other book in my library that has been as helpful and all together mind altering. Eloquent Ruby and This book are among my most prized books. If you ever wanted a deep down inside out look at ruby... this is the book. It's not all "technical" or over bearing... It's honestly the simplest read i have ever had in my studies of Ruby and programming in general. I don't want to spoil it, it's just worth it!

"I love this book" - By arabella
I love this book. Is probably one of the best out there o learn the framework if you are familiar with basic programming principles. I'm a front-end developer (angular mainly) and this book is helping me so much in understanding both ruby as a language and rails as the framework to develop web apps from the beginning to the end.

"This book is great, I have tried learning Ruby on Rails and ..." - By funky jamma (Florida)
This book is great, I have tried learning Ruby on Rails and skipping ruby and i have to say this is the way to go. A great rundown on ruby before you get started on rails to ensure a full understanding. The only issue that i have with this book is that the print is very small and the code samples are written in a light gray color making them even harder to read. I recommend getting the kindle version if thats an option for you.

"Excellent app building guide!" - By J. Russell
I was a little intimidated when I first looked at Ruby on Rails. Building apps, coding, and much more seemed very foreign to me and hard to understand. But Harry Oliver has made it possible for even the most troubled of people manage creating apps. His instructions are simple and straightforward. But what I appreciate he most is after he teaches you a certain app he challenges you. He gives you a list to accomplish to test your new skills. This book can be useful to so many people.

He provides pictures of the steps he does so you can check for reference and it is a big help. Very please with Ruby on the Rails.

"Not sure if this is the best book to start!" - By Fabio Utzig (Porto Alegre, Brazil)
I bought this book after reading the other reviews here. All the people I know personally who work with Ruby learned from the Pickaxe but from the reviews I came to the conclusion that this could be actually a better book for learning the language. So, I didn't read the Pickaxe and cannot really make a comparison but from what I heard and comparing with this one I would get the Pickaxe if I should choose again.

After finishing reading this book I can say that there are a lot of topics that I really don't remember anymore and lots of doubts that I still have. The major flaw here is that there are no exercises anywhere in the book. All the best programming books I read in the past have very good exercises to evaluate what you've learned (I could give as examples Learning Perl, C++ Programming Language, ... full review

"A great book for learning Ruby" - By Amy Foster
I read this book as a way of learning Ruby. I have experience in other languages, and I wanted to expand my skill set. The book is incredibly well written and thoroughly explains the concepts.

It begins by giving an overview of variables, objects, strings, and methods. The details are great for someone who is newer to programming. One aspect I really appreciated is that the author called out when items in Ruby were handled different than other languages such as boolean values.

The book also contained details explaining the online documentation and Ruby Gems. I found this helpful as understanding gems was one of the main attractions to choosing this language.

Finally, the book concluded with a step-by-step guide to building a small web based application which included saving and retrieving data. The app served as a great launching point as ... full review

    "Beautiful" - By Jolle
I really want to check more than one box for each category because one does not give a true description of any element of this book. For example, the mood could very easily be described as dark and suspenseful but ultimately hopeful! I won't describe the book or the plot because I hate reviewers that tell so much you don't need to read the book. It is an excellent, well-written book that is well worth reading.

"Very good book on practical design" - By MartinB
I read this book after hearing the author talk on a "Ruby Rogues" podcast a few months ago. It was apparent that the attendees were all quite impressed by Sandi Metz's book and they all recommended it. I bought the book based on this recommendation, read it and I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed it. The book focuses on the "art" of design in the Ruby world. That being said, the concepts, ideas and techniques describe in this book can be applied to most dynamically typed languages.

What was most interesting (and something you don't see in a lot of software book) was how Sandi describes how a senior software designer will make decisions, while considering the technical debt that comes with those decisions. I have been working in software for over 20 years and this is what I find is missing when ... full review
