"Systems and not an island" - By Hannah Lee (LA, CA)
Discussing a topic like systems is like trying to discuss databases or networks: you know what they are but do you really? Donella Meadows doesn't try to dumb things down but does write about systems and the complexity of systems that is not only completely relevant for any level of scholarship, it is easy to read. If you're getting bogged down by some of the ideas, go to the Appendix where there is a clear layout of what she discusses in the bulk of the book.

I'm reading this book for a PhD level coursework about the foundations of systems in the social sciences but really, this is for anyone who wants to gain perspective on how things work not as single phenomenon but how things are interconnected in such a way that you cannot take for granted even buying a cup of coffee in the morning. Additionally, this ... full review

Had to rent this for a graduate course, it's alright, not too dry or outdated yet so there's a good amount of new information.

"Very good book for various audiences" - By Manuel Machado
Very good book for various audiences, from students, to database professionals who would like to update their knowledge. The book is well written, organized and structured as well. The ebook version lacks some materials which might be necessary for some readers.
    I strongly recommend it.

    Regards.

"The new edition finds a better way!" - By M. Koch (New York, NY)
I had purchased the original edition of this book and was skeptical that much had changed, however it had been useful as a reference and teaching guide for my office and was getting "dog-eared." I was pleasantly surprised that the "new and improved" edition actually is! This is a very well laid out reference book that now includes color images of compelling processes and projects. Also, the "goals and results" sections at the end of each section are helpful. Really a wonderful teaching and learning guide that gets people excited about the infinite possibilities in developing signage and wayfinding. Also, the previous version was larger and a bit more cumbersome to carry - the new version is a smart size.

"Decent Book" - By Amazon Customer
Condition of the book was exactly as advertised - like new. Had some issues with item delivery, though the issue ended up being with the post office in my town, so not the fault of the seller.

Book itself is interesting and fairly decent at explaining concepts. This is the textbook used for one of my grad school courses, and it's been very useful so far. I appreciate the online support for this book as well.

"Great book if you read it for an university course" - By Campegius Bronkhorst (Tucson, AZ USA)
I think this is a good book if it is the textbook for a computer science course. It reads easily and I didn't find it boring at all since the subject interests me. The text starts with simple concepts and builds up to more advanced concepts, just like a text book is supposed to do.
This book is probably not an easy read for non computer science people, the pace might be too slow for people who already know lots about operating systems, and it might not go into enough details, but this is all typical for a text book on such a broad subject. I give it 4 stars just because textbooks are so overpriced.

"Very good; very basic" - By R.D. Hight (Kelso, WA USA)
If you want to go from knowing nothing about grid-based graphic design to knowing something, this is your book: accessible, clear, and narrowly focused. It forcefully explains why grids are good, how to build them, and how to zero in on the right one for a particular purpose. It's hard to imagine a new designer who wouldn't improve after reading it.

"Grid Systems in Graphic Design" is also old, short, and introductory. The author writes from a time when his preparation for a design project was to make sketches so detailed that they sometimes involved actually hand-drawing accurate copies of the typefaces he intended to use. On the subject of page proportions, he stresses the benefits of DIN sizes and moves on. His examples are great at demonstrating the clarity that comes from applying a grid to a single, flowing stream of content, but it would have been nice ... full review

"Beynd Excellence!" - By Professor Emeritus P. Bagnolo (DOWNTOWN NYC/Chic. NM USA)
Building Structures Illustrated: Patterns, Systems, and Design
FRANCIS D. K. CHING, BARRY S. ONOUYE, DOUGLAS ZUBERBUHLER

I started working for my Uncles architectural/engineering firm as a sophomore. Throughout high school, design school and graduate school architecture remained one of my majors, and one of my three Ford Foundation Fellowship Awards was in architecture.

I worked for the family firm for several years, designing and building Catholic hospitals, churches, schools. Later I worked for five years for an architectural firm, which specialized in monumental church art, of all sorts. I was then recruited by colleges and universities to teach and accepted one of those offers, though I ended up teaching more art than architecture because despite my deans attempts to place all design into one division politics intervened blocking the rightful merger’s gained tenure as chair/coordinator of design and summer chair of architectural design. I was thus admitted as ... full review
