What a FASCINATING book! Yes, FASCINATING in all caps. This is the inside story of the White House's two-story private residence for the first families--from the Eisenhowers to the Obamas.
Author Kate Andersen Brower, a former White House reporter for Bloomberg News, conducted assiduous research and extensive interviews for this book, talking on the record to dozens of retired White House residence employees (some of whom worked at "the house" for 50 years), as well as some former first ladies and first children and presidential aides.
While there is lots of juicy inside info--such as, the staff regularly removing bongs from the bedrooms of Jimmy Carter's sons, dealing with outrageous (even shocking) demands from Lyndon Johnson and Nancy Reagan and the Clintons' extreme paranoia--the employees without exception speak of their time in the White House with awe and respect.

The author did a good job with his material. There was some interesting information about the white house but I wanted more. I guess the mundane things; meals,staff, state dinners, things like that.
The short biography of the presidents and their time in office helped with the changing times.

I enjoyed reading the history of the renovation or rebuilding of the White House. I did not know the extreme lengths taken in the work done. If you look at the movie 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' from the early 1950's in an opening scene, filmed on location in Washington, D.C. you can see the White House in the background under renovation.(150) -

I got mine a few days ago, and it's just fascinating. Phillips-Schrock goes into great detail about the original, losing proposals, initial design changes, failed expansions, and renovations. He has great recreations of the various rooms' decor from the early days and a substantial section on inventories and room usage at various periods. It's not the usual "virtual tour" of the president's residence. It's really a deep dive into the history and usage of the house. It's just incredible.(10) -

I read this book to my 3rd grade class recently and they loved it. The book is full of great facts about the White House. The stories of events that happened are written in an interesting way and my kids were fascinated the entire time we were reading it. The vocabulary was perfect for 3rd grade or above. The illustrations were very well done, and I was particularly fond of the boxes with extra facts. This is a wonderful book in a wonderful series, and I highly recommend it for any children seeking nonfiction books to read.(15)
