I completely agree with Sinek's belief in WHY and recommend this book. However, I cannot give the book five stars because as much as I agree with WHY I disagree with Sinek's assertion about manipulation. He makes no distinction between people who manipulate and those who ethically persuade.
This caught my attention like a red flag because I teach people the psychology behind the persuasion process and how to use that knowledge ethically. A company offering a sale as inducement to buy may not be as compelling a reason to do business with a company as a strong WHY but that doesn't mean a sale is a manipulative tactic. If a customer gets the same product for less they probably feel better than paying full price, not manipulated. Nor is it manipulative to make sure prospect or an audience knows your credentials because it will make it easier for ... full review(1,740) -

I started with the second edition of the Ten Day MBA around the year 2000. I used both the second and third editions as a primer for business and MBA concepts over the last decade. At the time, I did not know if I would go back to get an MBA. Several years ago, I enrolled in an evening Professional MBA program at Radford University. I am about 80% complete with the PMBA; and I used the fourth edition to help consolidate my knowledge before moving on to the last few classes. Reading the fourth edition was a much richer experience, now that I had classroom experience to relate the material. It is true that you can use this book as a primer if you aren't going to get the MBA in the near term; and as a review if you are about to ... full review(165) -

List Price: $26.99 Price: $16.19 You Save: $10.80 (40%) "This is a Short, Simple book. Those are not Faults." - By Aaron Stewart (Palo Alto, CA)
"If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter." - Blaise Pascal
This is a short, simple book. Those are not faults, although many people may dismiss the value of its contents for those reasons. It is a common bias to assume the simple is naive, trite or otherwise lacking. Appropriately, this book calls out simplicity and clarity as mandatory properties of good leadership - for it to have been an obtuse or florid work would have been an act of hypocrisy.
The concept of extreme ownership has impressive psychological and philosophical ramifications but the book does not bother with pointing out these clever derivations or second-order effects. I do not think this is because Jocko is unaware of them, but because this is a practical book for practical application - the second order benefits will be apparent to the reader who tries and then ... full review(1,412) -

The book was very good. I found that the principles made sense - in particular hiring the right people, creating to don't lists, the hedgehog principle and the flywheel. A question asked in the FAQ dealt with how the book applies to non CEOs, and while the question was answered well, I felt that the thought pattern could have been better integrated to appeal to a larger audience as to how the concepts may relate to their function in the organization. That said, there is no reason the same concepts can not be developed within departments.

Price: $11.91 "Worth rereading" - By DeJaan LaFleur
This is an incredible read. I'd recommend it to any entrepreneur or anyone looking to be an entrepreneur. I like the fact that these are well known individuals, with real experiences that they've been through and not just perfectly, made up stories. Great Book George, this book is definitely worth rereading.(40) -

List Price: $18.00 Price: $11.06 You Save: $6.94 (39%) "Brilliant, but reads like a Textbook. What did you expect?" - By Michael A. Robson (Shanghai, China)
"You dropped 150 grand on an education you could have gotten for $1.50 in late charges at the public library." Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting
In The Personal MBA Josh Kaufman makes a very compelling case (as does Will Hunting) that for people considering an MBA, the economics aren't that great. For many graduate students (not just Business majors), it feels like a Casino: everyone takes the tests, and gets primed, then takes out a huge loan from the bank (often a six-figure amount) hoping that when they come out the other side, there will be an awesome, high-paying job waiting for them. It's a financial transaction, not really an educational one. In fact, much of the education gleaned from an Master in Business Administration is theoretical and marginally updated from the projects and Case Studies done in Bachelor of Business and Economics programs; after all, how can ... full review(544) -

List Price: $26.95 Price: $17.51 You Save: $9.44 (35%) "Proof of David's Leadership" - By Chris
I was aboard the USS Santa Fe for 2 years prior to Captain Marquet and 2 years WITH Captain Marquet. We were truly the worst boat in in Pearl Harbor. We were a disengaged crew and the most common phrase on the boat was FTN (use your imagination). Many crew members had that written in their hats. Everyone was getting out. When Captain Marquet came aboard this all changed. Pride crept back in. Guys started reenlisting. We were now proud to be Navy and proud of our boat!
David truly walks the walk. He immediately changed our culture. I personally benefitted from his empowerment approach. I was a naive farm boy with very little self confidence when he arrived. Under his leadership I qualified and stood watches normally reserved for officers. I was named 'Junior Leader ... full review(677) -

List Price: $23.00 Price: $13.21 You Save: $9.79 (43%) "Get on the BUS!" - By Anonymous
I just wanted to take a moment and thank you. As a small business owner I spend much of my free time reading business books. While browsing the selection online, I stumbled across your book "The Energy Bus". Despite the fact that I had vaguely heard of the book before this time I felt inspired to purchase it and I can't tell you how glad I am that I did.
I wish I could say I blew through the book in an hour but unfortunately with a job, a business, wife, two young kids and a dog, trying to find more than ten minutes to read at a time can be a challenge. Reading it slowly gave me more time to ponder the ideas and really enjoy the story.
The minute I finished the book I could not wait to share it with everyone I know ... full review(1,227) -

List Price: $24.95 Price: $14.47 You Save: $10.48 (42%) "Ten Plus the McKinsey Award Winner, William Lazonick’s “Profits Without Prosperity”" - By Robert Morris (Dallas, Texas)
This is the second volume in what I hope will become an annual series of anthologies of the best articles that appeared in Harvard Business Review during the previous calendar year. Frankly, I am pleased and relieved that I was not among those who were charged with making the selections, each of which is eminently worthy. I commend the Editors on the excellent Introduction. It brilliantly sets the "table" for the intellectual "feast" that follows.
The articles average about 15 pages in length. (Keep in mind that Amazon's "Look inside" option creates immediate access to the table of contents in all of the anthologies: HBR 10 Must Reads, HBR Guides to, HBR on, etc.) Executives with little (if any) time for reading business books and journals will welcome the material in HBR's 10 Must Reads 2016: The Definitive Management Ideas of the Year from Harvard Business Review. They will ... full review(8) -

A friend of mine gave me this book to borrow a little over a year ago because she felt I needed a boost. I was just getting over a divorce after an 18 year marriage. The divorce took 3 years and even though I felt healed I was having trouble feeling positive and I didn't know what direction I needed to go in. The 1st chapter hooked me with the words, "letting go of baggage :)" I started doing the assignments daily and I found I started feeling lighter. I think because I had a goal and the book was giving me a positive direction to go in. My creativity was sparked and my humor started showing up more often. I found I was able to give of myself again without feeling scared or like someone might hurt me. I think it's helped me be a better me and ... full review(202) -

I really loved reading this book. It gave me a good look at an area I know nothing about-business, and especially women in business. It describes how much harder women have to work to reach the upper echelons of big companies, and the problems they face once they've arrived. Best of all, it's done using descriptions of actual situations, which makes reading very interesting . I finished reading feeling much admiration for the clear & colorful way the book is written. I highly recommend it(40)
