Fascinating book on warriors who laid it all on the line. It lays out the personal stories of the men behind the mask. Their heroism makes me feel so worthless, like I've accomplished not even a tenth of what they have. But in all honesty knowing who and how they lived inspires me to be more like them. I kept asking myself how hard it must be to know you are profiting off of a friend's death. But in all honesty by the time you read the first story and realize someone needs to tell the world about the men sacrificing so much. And without knowing their stories is a tradegy. Their lives and memories should be celebrated. The world needs to hear it.(266) -

The original book was terrific too, but I appreciate the second edition's effort to replace Bill Cosby (once his less heroic behavior surfaced) and some of the less exciting figured for Jesse Owens and Oprah Winfrey, etc among the 10 new heroes feature din the second edition. I wish Reagan and Gates weren't mischaracterized as heroes (rather than villains) but I imagine the publishing company put pressure on the authors to include those blowhards. Nonetheless, the brief but engaging entire on all 50 lend themselves to springboard to all kinds of classroom activities, research possibilities, and even debates (re: who perhaps does and doesn't belong). I was sorry to see Ida B Wells-Barnett and Mathew Henson leave, but many of the new entries are a helpful update of some known albeit important heroes and heroines for students to learn about. Very good and interesting stories, but the books would really benefit from having a lot more illustrations. It would be wonderful if about 50 color illustrations could be added to each volume (or at least 50 more black and white illustrations). Stories are good, but the target age range for children readers greatly enjoy illustrations.(1) -
