Nothing truly laugh-out-loud funny, but lots of head scratching odd entries. And the entries are both painstakingly researched and lovingly restored to their former, uh, 'Glory.' A very accessibly priced hardcover book, done in beautiful (and not incorrectly aligned and blurry, as the originals often were) crisp colors on fine paper stock, and weighing it at a few pages above 250, I can't see how you can go wrong by purchasing this book. A truly delightful peek at many long-forgotten and cringe-worthy super heroes, super heroines, and some unclassifiable robots, vampires, animals, and other absurdities that someone, at some time, said; "Hey, yeah! That IS a good idea - let's run with it!" Oh, and the one thing that groups most of these characters together - a loyalty to the Allies in WWII! "Come on, fellas - let's go overthrow Tojo!"
A fine book, indeed.(106) -

I really love the variety of these comics books, and they actually gave me 25 instead of 20 which was AWESOME! I think these comics would range between good and very fine quality. I love the classic look and feel to them.(114) -

The Legion of Regrettable Supervillians, by Jon Morris, is a great book in my opinion because it touches on some interestingly bad characters. An issue the book runs into, however, is the fact that it does lean toward the more obscure characters out there. A guy who wrangles roaches? A person dressed up like a preying mantis? They are in there. Will the average comic reader know them? Probably not. Still, I personally do not think it hurts the book as long as you know this.
As far as the aesthetic quality of the book, I really like the presentation. From the outer cover and design to the inner paneling, it gives you a nice setup that makes for some interesting off-the-cuff reading or for some good coffee table placement. The outside cover looks very much like an older comic book and the inner portions are broken down into ... full review(21) -

Hope Nicholson has a lot of knowledge about comic books, the role of female characters in comics, and the changes to the literary art form from the 1930s through today. However, while she Nicholson mentions several times in the book that this is a "feminist" book, the criteria for including (or not including) particular characters was a mystery. It was a real adventure to learn about comics and character I may never have heard of but some series and characters were missing or included that made me scratch my head. "Girl Genius" is discussed in the 2010s introduction yet none of the characters is focused on yet back in the 1940s chapter there are several "weak" characters that made me cringe to even read about. Give me a reason for each character to be chosen, make it clear, so that a one-issue heroine seems worthy to be included along with ... full review(11)
