"A very good complement to practical learning" - By ABDUL
It is very good because it is easy to read and well organized. Some people would complain about a lot of images and empty spaces, but easy on the eyes for me and give you info in bites. The best way to use these books it to combine them with practical training (widely available online or on YouTube. Like SoloLearn and CodeAcademy). Read the relevant chapter in this book first, then practice it. Coding needs reading and practicing using various sources, because no single source gives you the whole story. It is a matter of accumulating bits and pieces of knowledge.

"Well-writen, pedagogically-sound text on creating web elements with HTML5 and CSS3" - By Veriflan
The many 5-star reviews here by web design experts led me to choose this book to help build my website. But this is the viewpoint of a beginning web-builder, albeit someone who has had a lot of experience of learning from books. The book is NOT about user experience, the aesthetics of web design, search engine optimization, etc.. After a sprinkling of facts about the history, workings, and administration of the web in the first chapters, it is all about techniques of generating text and image content with HTML5 and CSS3. A couple of concluding chapters briefly introduce JavaScript. HTML5's role is proposed to be confined to structure or semantics (meaning), leaving all formatting to CSS (except, of course, some default text formatting, else text could not display in HTML alone). This is in contrast with earlier versions of HTML, where one was not discouraged from using as much HTML ... full review

"Excellent introduction to web development" - By Nicholas C. Zakas (Silicon Valley, CA)
My first impression of the book is that it's beautiful. The text is large and the pages are colorful, making it very easy to thumb through when in a hurry. When I wasn't in a hurry and sat down to read it, I found that the book almost told the entire story through pictures. The words are there and technically correct, but it's the visuals in the book that really communicate information to the reader.

I admired Duckett's approach to this book. He completely dispels with the buzzwords that glitter so many books these days. There's mention of HTML5 and CSS3, for sure, but it's done in such a way that it doesn't seem gimmicky or hyped. The title of the book itself is evidence of this. Duckett clearly doesn't want you thinking about HTML 4 vs. HTML5 or CSS 2 vs. CSS3. Instead, he wants you to understand ... full review

"Before you write one word, choose one color, or size one image, read this book." - By Mark Myers (Beautiful Taos, NM)
I don't think it's going too far to say that the most important issue in website design is usability. And here, my friends, is the bible of usability. Krug is wise, clear, persuasive, and funny. His years of work in the field are apparent throughout. His humanity is a nice bonus. He correctly asserts that a well-designed website is a gesture of kindness as well as a commercial plus.

I was in the advertising business for 30 years, and was something of a direct-response expert, so I was confident that I could design an effective landing page. Have you read Dunning and Kruger's "Unskilled and Unaware of It"?

Unfortunately, I designed my website before reading the book. But the day after I finished reading, I started to rework everything. The new site is going to go live in a few weeks. There isn't a single thing I didn't ... full review

"Aang = air bending. Katara = water bending. Lea = CSS bending." - By Vicente d'Avila Melo Sarmento
Right. So you are on your own... thinking... "Hey! I know CSS! Selectors, pseudo stuff and everything..."
And as a good CSSer that you are, you keep studying to keep improving, isn't that right? Good.

Then, one day, you find that one of your beloved masters, Lea Verou, wrote a book with some css secrets. And you think: "Cool. Secrets from her! I may find a thing or two to learn".

And you buy. And you read. And your brain explodes, because you have just found out that you actually knew almost nothing about CSS.

Lea Verou not only know the paths to solve problems with CSS, but she knows the WHYs behind each solution. And that's a HUGE difference.

I hope that the world will see more books from Lea Verou very soon.

Cheers to a true CSS bender.

"Good book but too focused on Dreamweaver" - By Juan Diego
The book is a good tool for beginners, such as myself. However, it supports a very important portion of its explanations on Adobe Dreamweaver. For first time learners such as myself, who don't happen to own that Software, this becomes a nuisance, since you fail to receive the complete explanation or concept, and instead get the "it comes automatic in Dreamweaver" alternative.

"If you have the technical skills, but are flummoxed by picking colors and placing images and text, this book is for you." - By Davis Smock
Solid entry into understanding the design part of web design. I use this as a required text in a college course I teach. I've found it does an excellent job of filling the gap often left by books that focus more on software than the process designing a site. Those with a graphic design background will find that there isn't much new information here, although the author does a great job of detailing how graphic design principles map onto web design. The intended audience is certainly those that are either learning web design or already have the technical skills (e.g. coding, Dreamweaver, etc.), but don't have a graphic design background. I highly recommend it. Another good on is White Space is Not Your Enemy, although it doesn't focus solely on web design.

"Great book and very current" - By Indika Dekumpitiya
I picked this book up after spending frustrating times on the internet for proper tutorials on web design. While I found some good ones on web, this book served as a highly comprehensive beginner/intermediate level guide and also a reference.

Having read a fair bit on web design already I can attest this book is very current and a great value for money for beginners.

Wish I found this earlier - would have saved a lot of time.

    Keep up the good work!

"Another great volume!" - By TexasAggie (College Station, Texas)
This is my third purchase in this series, and they keep getting better. What's really neat now is that I have all three on the shelf and it's like a time warp into the past... so much of web design has changed. It provides very unique perspective - almost a chronicle of design over time. I hope they keep making new volumes. Will be amazing in ~10 years to look back. Also, I hope they keep the same size/format so they look good on the shelf. :)
