I found this to be the single-most helpful book about writing novels that I have ever read -- and I have read my fair share. Weiland's book is perfectly understandable, presented logically and sometimes it's even funny! (a big deal for the sometimes dry instructional works out there). She highlights everything you will need to know to plan and execute your story. Without this fundamental structure behind your story, you have no hope of writing a totally killer novel. I can't even imagine how I managed to plot and execute 6 different books without first reading this one.
There are a ton of other more comprehensive and informative reviews already out there, so I won't repeat the same things. Basically you don't know it, but you need this book. Trust me. Whether you've just begun plotting your very first novel, or like me, you're starting you're hundredth this book ... full review(430) -

Price: $11.99 "Perfect Regardless of A Secret Timeframe Deadline That A Writer Has Set For Themselves" - By Stella Carrier (Hyattsville, Maryland)
I must preface this review by making it clear that I’m posting an unpaid review as a person who mainly plans on writing stories as a side career to my full-time job. This kindlebook of How To Write Short Stories And Use Them to Further Your Writing Career by James Scott Bell appealed to me because I write short freestyle stories for fun, which has also helped other areas of my life in creative ways (i.e. spiritual benefits such as more lucid dreams that have helped me see into what may be taking place in my life in the near future andor ideas on how to prepare for it if the event is to take place regardless). I have freely posted some of my freestyle stories on my blogs and I’m ready to create opportunities to take my short story writing to another level. Fortunately, this kindlebook appeared in an ... full review(99) -

List Price: $6.99 Price: $3.03 You Save: $3.96 (57%) "Written for kids but useful for adults, too" - By J. Green (Los Angeles, California)
A friend recommended this to me with the understanding that it was written for young people, and my first impression was that it would be great for my kids but I would have little use for it. Instead I've decided that I really like the way the various components of writing are discussed in short and easy to read chapters that really get the point across. Plus it's inspiring, making the concepts very easy to apply.
The book covers the basics of writing fiction and does so in a very illustrative manner. It talks about the proper way to use dialog, adding details that help to set a tone or make a point, and others. There are a lot of instructive writing "assignments" that I didn't do, but which my kids found kind of fun. Overall, a nice and succinct book on the fundamentals ... full review(139) -

Much needed advise for the novice writer. Yes some issues with grammar, but minuscule compared to the wealth of information she is giving you. If you're just starting out, this is a great read.(17) -

We originally purchased this book from another website (for more money!) just at the end of my 3rd-graders school year. When it arrived, I looked through it and thought how great it would be to use during summer vacation. We both love to write, so I thought it would be a lot of fun to set a timer for five minutes, let him flip the prompts, and then we could have a "write-off" and compare our stories when the five minutes were up.
I showed him the book when he got home from school and he got such a kick out of the story ideas that I decided to send our book to school with him to give to his teacher as an end-of-year gift to use next year with her students in the same fashion, and we purchased another one for use at home.

Bill Roorbach came in our class and had us submit some writing to his blog. This book has some really cool exercises. My favorite, so far, (I haven't finished going through and doing all of them!) is the memory mapping. Doing that exercise lead to some amazing recollections, not to mention dreams of past life events melded into the now. Enjoy using this book for what ever class or writing mission one may have to accomplish.(66) -

Price: $7.99 "Great book for all Writers and Bloggers!" - By KyLee
As a blogger I would have to say that I have really found this book to be a must have. How many times have you begin to write and then all of a sudden get writers block? Well I am none of those people and I have this book in easy access on my Kindle Fire HD 6 so I can go to it whenever I am stumped on what to write about. I believe this book really helps you to give you ideas. One thing I love about it is there are 1,000 props to choose from. Some I have found werent really of interest, but if you really need to write a blog post or any kind of writing but just not sure where to start, this book is of great help!(108) -

I've read my share of creative writing books, and this is probably one of the best. First, I got hooked after the first two pages, and that is a rare thing when it comes to nonfiction, even creative writing books, as much as I love the subject. LaPlante finds a way to make it a very enjoyable experience, with lots of diversity. One of my favorite parts is the student examples she has in there, because I'm a student myself, and I find it more personal to me when I read them. It also helps with my own answers of the exercises I will no doubt have to do once my college class begins. Recommended for writers of all kinds!(82) -

Price: $0.00 "A pretty engaging and funny read...on writing." - By K. Silas (Chicago IL USA)
If you want an author who's been there and done that, that is not afraid to tell your jokes along the way, look to Jake Vander Ark. This book was a fairly fun to read for a free book about writing. While it seemed to meander around in places, it serves as a brilliant inspiration to someone new to the writing game or to a seasoned veteran. Thank you, Jake!(63) -
"Recommended for anyone interested in writing better characters" - By Tan Pei Ling
I was so excited to hear about Alida's series on writing craft. I managed to scrounge up enough cash to have her edit The Nutcracker King, and while I wish I could hire her for every book I write, I'm still a poor student and that is not possible. So with the Story Works Guide for Writing Character, I have a book that I can use as a reference when writing/revising my stories.
The Story Works Guide for Writing Characters is, as the title says, focused on characters. But since Alida considers characters, setting and plot to be three strands of one story braid, she does talk about the other two elements as and when they're related to character (for example, character arcs and plot are quite closely related).
Each chapter comes with an exercise (there are 12 in total), ranging from "finding the flaw in your plot" ... full review(18) -

This book was recommended for me after attending the San Francisco Writer's Conference and after reading it and avidly taking notes, I can say that this is definitely one of the most helpful, most specific books about writing out there. After a quick review of action, emotion, and theme, Alderson and Rosenfeld break down each of these three aspects of a manuscript into four different sections: one for the beginning, two for the middle, and one for the end. Then, the authors fixate on action, emotion, and theme with regards to these sections and explain what sort of scenes best fit them, and how to properly balance action and emotion to create and eventually identify overall themes. In addition to this, the authors use excellent examples in current and classic literature (everything from Winter's Bone to the Great Gatsby) to show how these authors have successfully attributed a great balance ... full review(40) -
