"Written for kids but useful for adults, too" - By J. Green (Los Angeles, California)
A friend recommended this to me with the understanding that it was written for young people, and my first impression was that it would be great for my kids but I would have little use for it. Instead I've decided that I really like the way the various components of writing are discussed in short and easy to read chapters that really get the point across. Plus it's inspiring, making the concepts very easy to apply.

The book covers the basics of writing fiction and does so in a very illustrative manner. It talks about the proper way to use dialog, adding details that help to set a tone or make a point, and others. There are a lot of instructive writing "assignments" that I didn't do, but which my kids found kind of fun. Overall, a nice and succinct book on the fundamentals ... full review

"It's about storytelling!!!" - By Tommy Balassa
I've read lots of books on the craft of writing and this one beats them all so far, hands down because it's not about writing, it's about storytelling, which is what fiction writers are attempting to do. Tell stories. Larry Brooks' has a voice that I've heard on VLOGS before and so it helped to put his voice into each word as I read it. What got me about this book the most, is that it's the only one I've ever read that inspired me to make immediate changes to stories I've already started and others. While reading the first chapter of this book, I was inspired and moved to change a manuscript I've been working on for a few months, in my first real attempt to outline rather than my usual "pantsing" which has gotten me nowhere. After I made the changes Larry's work inspired, I shared my changes ... full review

"Thank you Alice L.!" - By V Gordon
This book is one of those few books that can truly make a difference in your writing. The chapters are well thought out, the examples clear. When I first got the book, I flipped through it came to a section on dialogue. Within 5 minutes, I though oh wow, that's what I was missing! The rest of the book has been just as effective in improving my writing.

"Very helpful, much more than just structure!" - By Sheri-Lynn Marean (British Columbia Canada)
This book was extremely helpful. At first, I thought it would just be about the structure, like the arc of your story. It is so much more! I wanted to know if my first novel needed structure work. It was fine, but the little tips here helped immensely! After reading this, I added a few things to mine as suggested in Structuring your novel and it brought things together that much better. Tightened things up in my book/storyline. It talks about the hook and keeping your readers hooked, where and when to introduce characters by and so much more. It also helped bring my second book together. I was stuck on how to do my second book and I hadn't gotten to far into this book when my second book fell into place. Suddenly I saw my whole second book play out in my head! After that I had it ... full review

"A great gift for teachers, and a fun product for home!" - By C. Haga (Port Charlotte, FL)
We originally purchased this book from another website (for more money!) just at the end of my 3rd-graders school year. When it arrived, I looked through it and thought how great it would be to use during summer vacation. We both love to write, so I thought it would be a lot of fun to set a timer for five minutes, let him flip the prompts, and then we could have a "write-off" and compare our stories when the five minutes were up.

I showed him the book when he got home from school and he got such a kick out of the story ideas that I decided to send our book to school with him to give to his teacher as an end-of-year gift to use next year with her students in the same fashion, and we purchased another one for use at home.

"I Need to Write Some Short Stories" - By Allen G. Bagby (Texas)
I've been wanting to write short stories to keep my name out there while I write my next novel. Got this book for ideas. Reading it revealed to me that I already had a lot short stories in my head. You can't go wrong with a Bell book. I've read a lot of his books and they never fail to deliver solid value.

"Great book -- but beware" - By Amazon Customer (Florida)
I've read many books on screenwriting and Mckee's is among the best. Some of the reviews here suggest that Mckee's work is self-indulgent and over complicated. I disagree. It is fresh and enlightening. However... the problem I have is that Mckee communicates his opinions with such(and sometimes over bearing) certainty that the novice screenwriter may think his ideas are absolute law. Let's not forget that screenwriting is an art, and like any art it simply cannot be entirely reduced to formula...which McKee tends to do at times. For example, he describes the process of writing a screenplay as first writing down ALL the scenes on index cards, then rewriting those scenes with subtext, then writing a treatment, then finally writing a script, saving dialog until the very end of the process. That all sounds well and good but it doesn't work for me and many other screenwriters (some famous) that ... full review

"White is astutely written and ingeniously illustrated by Melissa Sweet, who as a Mainer and writer has particular ..." - By dear reader
This short, artistically rendered biography of E.B. White is astutely written and ingeniously illustrated by Melissa Sweet, who as a Mainer and writer has particular insight into White's affinity for the remote watery landscape he brought to life so simply yet evocatively in his essays and children's novels. Its target audience is somewhat elusive as it's too sophisticated for young children but is also not a traditional, in-depth biography; I'd say it was more of an appreciation of White for his fans ranging in age from teens on up.

"Autobio-tip book with benefits" - By gontojuptr
Finally a how to (of sorts) book about writing that makes one want to continue past the first chapter. It's about the writer himself which is infinitely interesting.
