We cut up a piece of old climbing rope, tied on... At Krebs Recycle, our motto is "get a new leash on life." Our design philosophy is to take stuff that might otherwise get chucked into the trash and transform it into something fun and useful. Our dog leashes, for example, are made from retired climbing rope that needs to be retired for safety reasons after several months in a gym or a season of climbing with guide services. We developed our first dog leash when our chocolate lab Reggie was a puppy.
We cut up a piece of old climbing rope, tied on a hook and handle, and loved the results. After experimenting with a variety of different methods and testing a bunch of prototype leashes with our friends and family, we came up with the leashes we're selling today. Krebs Recycle is a family business that we, the Krebs family, run out of basement. We take great pride in the work we do and hope you and your dog enjoy using the leashes as much as we enjoy making them. Want to get in touch with us? What is upcycling and why is it better than recycling?
At Krebs Recycle, we are remaking the way dog leashes are made. Our leashes are fashioned from durable, pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled nylon climbing rope. In fact, we donât recycle rope, we up-cycle it, which is better than recycling because we use the rope in its original form and extend its life by transforming it into a dog leash. There are no carbon-intensive recycling processes to turn the rope into something else. So you get a great leash, the rope stays out of the landfill, and the environment gets a break.
Why does recycled climbing rope make a great dog leash?
Climbers' lives depend on their rope, so it's got to be strong, durable, and dependable. But for safety and liability reasons, climbing rope must be retired early in its lifecycle. Climbing gyms usually retire rope after three months of use. Guide services typically retire rope after a season of climbing. And rope manufacturers have factory remnants that are too short for climbing rope but are great for making dog leashes. Sure, climbing rope is durable and dependable, but you'll also discover that it just feels great in your hand.
Where do we get our recycled climbing rope?
Krebs Recycle collects post-consumer recycled climbing rope from mountain-climbing guide services and indoor climbing gyms. We also collect pre-consumer recycled rope from U.S. rope manufacturers. Our list of participating recyclers continues to grow and now includes premier guide services such as Mountain Madness in Seattle, WA, the American Alpine Institute in Bellingham, WA, along with indoor climbing gyms such as Vertical World and Stone Gardens in Seattle.
How did we get started with Krebs Recycle?
We developed our first dog leash when our chocolate lab Reggie was a puppy. Tired of store-bought leashes that didnât last, we cut up a piece of old climbing rope that we had in our closet, tied on a hook and handle, and loved the results. After experimenting with a variety of different methods and testing a series of prototype leashes with our friends and family, we came up with the leashes we're selling today. In fact, we still walk Reggie using one of the original leashes we made a few years ago.
