Spoonflower's sister brand, Roostery, uses Spoonflowers textiles printing technology to create one of a kind home decor products. Founded in December 2015, Roostery is building a unique home décor marketplace where you'll be able to select from over 350,000 indie surface designs or upload your own patterns and bring them to life on an array of home décor products.

Spoonflower's digital textile printers are large-format inkjet printers specially modified to run fabric. Unlike conventional textile manufacturing, digital printing entails very little waste of fabric, ink, water or electricity. Spoonflower prints using eco-friendly, water-based inks on natural and synthetic fiber textiles. No additional chemicals are used in the printing or preparation process.

This type of printing has the added advantages of showing greater design detail than screen printing, as well as allowing designers the ability to use as many colors as they like in their designs. All Spoonflower fabric gets printed in Durham, North Carolina.

Spoonflower was founded in May 2008 by Stephen Fraser and Gart Davis, both formerly from Lulu Press. Spoonflower is headquartered in Durham, North Carolina, USA.

Fabric Care Instructions

Care Instructions:

With the exception of Silk, Spoonflower recommends machine washing fabric with phosphate free detergent on a warm or cool delicate setting before use. Tumble dry low or line-dry. Iron on the back of the printed fabric using the associated fabric type setting. Some shrinkage may occur during both the printing process and then, in addition, during washing.

For full care, ironing, and shrinkage details see below:

Shrinkage: Some shrinkage may occur during the both the printing process and then, in addition, during washing. Total estimated shrinkage for the base fabric(s) in your order is listed below:

  • Eco Canvas, Faux Suede: 0-2% in length and width.

  • Fleece: 1-2% in length and width

  • Basic Cotton Ultra, Cotton Poplin, Organic Cotton Sateen: 2-4% in length and width.

  • Kona Cotton, Linen Cotton Canvas, Minky: 2-4% in length and 0-2% in width.

  • Modern Jersey: 4-6% in length and 2-4% in width.

  • Organic Cotton Knit: 8-11% in length and width.

Washing/Drying

Basic Combed Cotton, Kona Cotton, Cotton Poplin, Organic Cotton Knit, Organic Cotton Sateen, and Linen Cotton Canvas:

For best results, we recommend washing these fabrics with phosphate free detergent in cool or warm water using a gentle or delicate machine cycle. We also suggest washing before use.

Some fading as a result of cleaning is typical for these fabrics. This is most notable on darker shades. Front loading washers contribute to color loss due to the increased tumbling action during cleaning. Fading can be minimized through use of cool wash settings and gentle wash cycles.

Tumble dry on a low temperature or permanent press setting and remove promptly.

Polyester Fabrics:

Wash separately in cool or warm water using a gentle machine cycle. Machine dry using a low temperature or permanent press setting and remove promptly to avoid wrinkles.

Ironing

Natural Fabrics

We recommend ironing our 100% cotton fabrics using standard settings for cotton. Steam may be used to remove wrinkles. We also recommend that you iron with the printed side down for best results.

Mineral deposits in the iron and spraying fabric with a water bottle may cause unexpected staining or marking and should be avoided.

High temperature settings may cause discoloration or crushing of linen and silk and we recommend use of synthetic settings and a light touch for these fabric types.

Polyester Fabrics

If required, use an iron with a light touch on a synthetic setting only. Higher iron temperatures may result in color transfer and, in extreme cases, melting of fabric.

How to Install Spoonflower Smooth (Water-Activated) Wallpaper

See video instructions here: youtu.be/dlMskXhh0TM

SPOONFLOWER WALLPAPER IS DESIGNED TO REPEAT BEAUTIFULLY WHEN INSTALLED AS DESCRIBED. READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU START.

NOTE: Smooth Water-Activated Wallpaper is not recommended for use on walls with texture. For textured walls, wallpaper may not be a good option and rigorous testing is recommended.

GETTING READY

GET A FRIEND & SET ASIDE SOME TIME
Hanging wallpaper is a two-person job. You’ll get the best result by hanging all of the wallpaper intended for a single wall or installation area at the same time.

MATERIALS
Painter’s tape
Paint roller or sponge
Sharp utility knife
Drop cloth
Bucket of clean water

PREPARE YOUR PAPER
Unroll each strip so that they face the same way. The top of the strip has no white space, and the bottom has a narrow line of white labeled “bottom”. Don’t trim any part of the paper before hanging.

PREPARE YOUR WALL
The wall you’re applying your paper to should be smooth, clean and dust free. Patch or sand any damaged areas of the wall, especially where sharp edges might pierce or tear the wallpaper. For best results, apply wallpaper to a surface that is a solid, light color. If your wall has been recently painted, allow at least 4+ weeks for the paint to cure before applying wallpaper. Applying wallpaper over uncured paint can lead to bubbling.

START HANGING

START AT THE LEFT EDGE OF YOUR WALL
If you’re applying multiple strips of wallpaper, hang them from left to right to ensure a smooth repeat of the design. Start with the upper left corner of the room, wall, or other surface you’re covering. If covering an entire room, choose an inconspicuous corner to begin since the repeat will not match up on the final seam.

WET AND FOLD THE PAPER
Using a clean paint roller or sponge, thoroughly wet the back of the paper, making sure not to leave any dry spots. Once it’s wet, gently fold the pasted side in on itself by folding the top and bottom of each piece to meet in the middle, taking care not to crease the paper (Figure A) -- this is called ‘booking.’. Set the paper aside for 3-5 minutes to rest and activate the adhesive.

START APPLYING
Pick up your first strip and unfold just the top half of the paper, leaving the edge labeled “BOTTOM” still booked (Figure B). Align the top of the wallpaper with the ceiling, making sure the edge is straight and even on the wall. Ask your friend to step back and check that the strip is straight and level. Painter’s tape can be used to secure the paper if it begins to slip. Once the paper is in position, unfold the bottom half of the strip and smooth downward with a damp sponge. Take care to remove large air bubbles as you go; smaller bubbles will dissipate as the wallpaper dries.

KEEP GOING
Pick up your second strip of wallpaper and apply it so that its left side overlaps the right side of the previous strip by approximately ¾ inch, carefully visually matching the repeat. There is no need to trim the overlap; it guarantees that the wallpaper will repeat seamlessly (Figure C). Repeat this step, moving from left to right and aligning each new strip over the strip to its left.

FINISHING UP
Let your wallpaper dry completely -- this usually takes about 3 hours -- before using a sharp utility knife to trim the extra paper at the edges of the paper. Wipe the walls with a damp sponge to remove excess adhesive. Now stand back and admire your work.

How to Install Spoonflower Woven (Peel & Stick) Wallpaper

    See video instructions here: youtu.be/LkGLlL6hsdE

SPOONFLOWER WALLPAPER IS DESIGNED TO REPEAT BEAUTIFULLY WHEN INSTALLED AS DESCRIBED. READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU START.

NOTE: Woven Peel & Stick Wallpaper is not recommended for use on walls with texture, walls painted with "scrubbable" paints, or in children's rooms. For children's rooms, Smooth Water-Activated Wallpaper is preferred. For textured walls, wallpaper may not be a good option and rigorous testing is recommended.

    BEFORE YOU START

GET A FRIEND & COLLECT YOUR MATERIALS
Hanging wallpaper is a two-person job! Grab a friend to help! You’ll also need a sharp utility knife, extra blades and the squeegee included with your order.

    PREPARE YOUR PAPER
Re-roll your wallpaper so that the top is on the outside of the roll. The top of each strip has no white space, whereas the bottom has a narrow line of white and is printed with your order number. Don’t trim any part of the paper before hanging.

    PREPARE YOUR WALL
The wall or surface to which you are applying wallpaper should be smooth, dry, clean and free of dust. Patch any damaged areas of the wall, especially where sharp edges might pierce or tear the wallpaper.

If you’re applying multiple strips of wallpaper, hang them from LEFT to RIGHT to ensure a smooth repeat of the design across the wall. Start with the upper left corner of the room, wall, or other surface you’re wallpapering. If covering an entire room, choose an inconspicuous corner to begin since the repeat will likely not match up on the final seam.

    APPLY THE FIRST STRIP
Pick up the first strip and peel away a few inches of the paper backing from the top of the roll. Fold the backing paper away from the adhesive and crease it, giving you a few inches of tack to begin your application. Don’t unroll the full length of the roll yet -- you’ll want to support the roll and unpeel it slowly as you go. Align the top of the wallpaper with the ceiling, making sure it is straight and even on the wall. Ask your friend to step back and check that the strip is straight and your design elements are level, then press the exposed adhesive area against the wall. Spoonflower’s Woven Wallpaper is repositionable, so if you need to adjust the placement simply peel the paper off the wall slowly and reapply as necessary.

Once the top of the strip is in position, gently peel the paper backing down 5-10 inches at a time and smooth the wallpaper onto the wall, moving from the center outwards. If necessary, use the squeegee to move large air bubbles to the edge of the design, being careful not to scratch your design.

    KEEP GOING!
Pick up your second strip of wallpaper and apply it so that its left side overlaps the right side of the previous strip by approximately ¾ inch, carefully visually matching the repeat. Do not trim the overlap; it guarantees that the wallpaper will repeat seamlessly. (Figure A) Repeat this step, moving from left to right and aligning each new strip over the strip to its left.

    FINISHING UP
Once you’ve applied all strips, use a sharp utility knife to trim any excess at the edges of the wall and any excess paper on the right edge of your installation area. Now, stand back and admire your work!
