The last time I paid much attention to Bobby McFerrin was a quarter century ago when my then-young son played "Don't Worry--Be Happy" repeatedly ad nauseum on our old stereo. My appreciation for McFerrin's versatile, inventive voice as expressed in that ebullient a cappella bit of fun waned significantly with its omnipresence in our house then, and I've had scant interest since. My loss.

Then recently I heard a piece on my public radio station in which McFerrin was being interviewed. He talked of his father, the distinguished baritone, and played a cut of the elder McFerrin's rich, full rendition of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" -- and then they played Bobby's take. Lighter, less traditional, but both an homage to his father's treatment of black gospel music and quite a significant departure from it. I decided then and there come home and download the song, but when I sampled all the tracks, I downloaded the entire album. Here McFerrin's virtuosity and versatility come into full play, in a deeper and to me more meaningful way than in his frothy '80s mega-hit. Bobby's "I Shall Be Released" is a beautiful rendition of this classic. "Joshua" is a jazzy number, and "Swing Low" and "Rest/Yes Indeed" exhibit country roots influences. "25:15" is McFerrin's own composition on a bit of scripture that had caught his eye which has a rootsy, bluesy vibe as well. I've played the album repeatedly since downloading it, and it sounds better to me every time through. I strongly recommend it.

Multi-talented musician Bobby McFerrin is known to be very innovative and to often 'break the rules', I was pleasantly suprised with his new CD release titled 'Spirityouall'. The 10 times Grammy Award winner has a mixture of spirituals and originals that cut across music genres in this new CD (13 tracks) that the record label term the overall sound of the album as being 're-imagined Americana'. You have spirituals/gospelly tracks as in "Joshua" (up-tempo jazzy track), the bluesy "Fix Me Jesus", "Woe", "Glory" & the bluesy-countryish "Jesus Makes It Good". Esperanza Spalding is featured in four tracks, "Everytime" (a mid-tempo opening R 'n B/jazzy track), "Swing Low" (a slow-tempo track with countryish base track), "Whole World" (a bluesy track with a wonderful melody and vocals. Great duet!) & "Glory" (a slow-tempo gospelly track). Esperanza Spalding adds great vocals to the tracks and her voice jells very well with Bobby McFerrin's.

Stand-outs/gems/my favourites include "I Shall Be Released" (beautiful countryish/bluesy base track with a wonderful melody. Great guitar work sound), "Whole World", "Gracious" (great countryish base track with a wonderful melody. Great violin play), "Jesus Makes It Good" & the closing "Rest/Yes Indeed" (countryish/bluegrassy track with an incredible melody). Good tracks include "Every Time", "Swing Low", "Woe", "25:15" (a bluesy track, great vocal range execution by Bobby McFerrin and wonderful guitar work), "Wade" (a slow-tempo jazzy track with great guitar playing) & "Glory". Okay tracks are "Joshua" & "Fix Me Jesus".

On overall, Bobby McFerrin has pleasantly suprised me with this new CD release 'Spirityouall' (I was for myself expecting songs similar to those from CDs 'VOCAbuLarieS' or 'Don't Worry, Be Happy'). He presents here a wonderful mixture of music styles, well executed and produced. A highly recommended CD listening.

I have listened to the album repeatedly since I purchased it, and love every track. McFerrin's inventiveness, playfulness, and deep spirituality come through in every rendition and original piece. Highly recommended!

We went and saw Mr. McFerrin this past March in Idaho Falls and it was a great show. He was playing songs from this album. His band was made up of very talented musicians. The encore was "Glory" and I could hear him singing it the whole hour and a half driving home that night.

I ordered this shortly after the show. Amazon had it on my doorstep on the release date, and it was three dollars less than I had agreed to pay when I ordered. I really like the benefits of being a Prime member. Thanks Amazon.

We heard Bobby McFerrin perform these songs in concert before the album was released, and it was such a phenomenal concert that I was hesitant to buy spirityouall when it came out. I was afraid that the recorded versions of these songs wouldn't live up to the live experience of them. But they do! Each song is glorious in the way the instruments and vocals dance around each other. Some of these songs are so familiar to me - sung in church and around campfires - but Bobby makes them all fresh. And the new songs, the original songs, fit right in with the old spirituals. I will be listening to this over and over again.

I'm sorry. I wish I liked it. I completely admire and respect the musician but this album just didn't hit a chord with me. I honestly didn't care for any of the songs. If you are here, looking to buy a CD though, you are likely one of two types. You've either previewed the album elsewhere and are here because you love it and want to get a hard copy, or... you are a Bobby fan and you buy everything Bobby. That was the case for me. Unfortunately I did not love this Bobby album. There are no songs on this album that have impact. They are all, of course, performed well and produced well. Bobby could burp it would no doubt be musically beautiful. But the songs themselves, for the content and impact, meh.
