An excellent case for the iPhone 5

I previously tried the Luvvitt Cristal Case for the iPhone 5 and discovered that if you placed the the phone face down, it would touch the surface and potentially scratch. At the very least, it didn't protect it. The Splash Zero is as lightweight as the Luvvitt Cristal, but has a small edge that protects the face of the phone when placed glass-side down. The PolyCarbonate material feels great and will definitely protect my iPhone 5 without adding a lot of weight or bulk, e.g., Otter cases. The Luvvitt is made of clear plastic and attracts much more dust and dirt than this case.

If you're looking to protect your phone from drops or a particularly harsh use environment, this case may not be for you. The primary purpose of this one is to prevent scratches and minor damage to the finish, both front and back while being as unobtrusive as possible.

So why only 4 stars? The phone is a bit tough to hold for a long period of time with the case on. The reason is that the side edge I spoke about above, the ones that protects the face of the phone, feel a bit sharp while holding the phone, and I find that I'm always adjusting how I hold it to avoid contact with that area. I want to be clear that they're not really "sharp", they just feel that way. It's minor, really, but if it annoyed me it may do the same thing for you. I usually use a Bluetooth headphone with the phone sitting on my desk or in my pocket, so for me it's not a big deal, but some people will clearly be bothered with it.

All-in-all, a good inexpensive case for the new iPhone 5 that preserves it's sleek look while protecting it from scratches and minor abuse.

UPDATE: Friday, March 15, 2013 I take back the comment about the edge feeling a bit sharp. Maybe it's worn down over time, but I just don't notice it anymore. I still think this is an excellent case and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for moderate protection from scratches to the front and back of an iPhone 5.

Good low profile case but not the best

Bought this case because it was one of the few low profile cases available at iPhone 5 launch with Prime 2-day shipping. Overall this is a good low profile case but the design could use some refinement.

Fit: ***** (5 out of 5 stars) The case fits very snugly and securely around the edges of the iPhone 5 yet is not difficult to snap on or off.

Finish: **** A smooth velvety texture that's not too rubbery. I imagine the tack might increase after a few months of use, similar to other soft touch plastics, but it won't collect lint or dust.

Design: ** This is where the case falls short in my opinion. Even though the thickness of the case is minimal and the fit is just about perfect, the case just does not feel that great in the hand. The edges on the back of the case are only slightly rounded, giving a "sharp" feeling when holding it, opposed to the smartly beveled edges of the iPhone 5 itself or the more rounded edges of other cases (Incase Snap Case) that have a much better feel. The top and bottom edges of the case also have an unnecessary "shelf" feature that extends beyond the top and bottom rounded corners of the phone. This makes the top power button harder to access and could potentially interfere with docking the iPhone on the bottom. I think it also detracts from the aesthetic design, artificially lengthening the look. I've seen other cases with similar thickness that don't have this shelf feature and look better. As a positive there are generous cutouts for the camera/flash area on the back and for the volume/vibrate buttons on the side.

Protection: *** Since this is a low profile case protection isn't the highest priority. I haven't dropped it yet but it does appear to provide adequate corner coverage in case of a fall. One concern is that the front edges of the case barely protrude above the front face of the phone (probably less than 0.5mm), they are practically flush. I'd like to see the case slightly more proud of the phone screen to provide more standoff distance when placed face down.

Overall: *** A nice looking case that fits great but is held back by some unrefined design elements. If the back edges were more rounded and the top and bottom shelfs cut back, this would be an outstanding case. As is, it will do the job but I'm going to keep looking around.

Minimalist case

Among Splash's lineup, this is the case that provides the least amount of protection. The only reason I wanted a case was to protect the camera lens with minimum impact to usability of the phone. I don't care if the rest of the phone gets the usual dings and scratches. So this case does the trick. Since its thickness is 1mm, that's how much space it gives you between the camera lens and whatever surface you place the phone on. It was setting the phone atop and sliding it across hard surfaces that scratched up the camera lens on my iPhone 4, so I didn't want to make the same mistake again.

There's virtually no protection on the front of the phone. The back is fully enclosed and protected, with the exception of a hole for the camera and flash. The sides are also fully enclosed except for openings for the buttons, connectors, and whatnot.

The case fits securely and dimensions are spot on. The material feels like silicone in that it's low-friction, so it's easy for me to slide the phone in and out of my pocket. Yet when I'm holding the phone sideways as a camera, it feels more secure in my grip than it does without the case, probably due to the extra gripping area.

It includes a really nice screen protector. However, I failed at applying it--I got a bunch of dust underneath it. The dust sticks to the screen protector and once it's there, you're doomed to a lifetime of air bubbles.
