Not what I expected, but probably got what I paid for
on May 14, 2014
These shoes caught my eye at 67% off their original price. Upon receiving the Charcoal/Galactic color (a dark brown) & opening the box they looked terrific, especially for the price paid - leather feels soft & the details of the shoe were pleasing. My feet run between an 11/11.5 & the 11.5 in this shoe was a great fit (no need to size up for me unlike another Amazon reviewer).
Taking the very first step in the shoe the leather on the top of the toe box at the shoe's flex point became lined with small cracks and the overall area of the cracking became much lighter in color (see the uploaded photo). It made the shoes look distressed, which was an unwanted/unexpected look. I contacted the shoe's manufacturer to see if this was due to a defect in the leather dying/finishing and was told this was an intended effect for this shoe and that these effects "render each pair uniquely one of a kind."
The cracking is such that I feel like it would take frequent application of leather cremes/conditioners to cover it up, and with this being basically a casual everyday shoe I don't want to have to obsess over its care like I would with a much more expensive dress shoe - that said I also don't want to wear a shoe that looks so damaged right out of the box on the first step. For comparison my other casual shoes are Johnston & Murphy, Keen, Clarks, Rockport, Dr. Martens, and even a pair of Dr. Scholls that are somewhat trendy and don't look like they belong on my grandfather - and none of these shoes (even the nubuck leather ones like this Bed Stu Lather) exhibited this type of effect even after significant wear.
If you want a shoe that will show distress immediately upon its first wear this is a shoe you should consider but if not you should definitely look elsewhere. Bed Stu makes some attractive shoes but unfortunately after this experience I would most likely not consider purchasing any of their products in the future.
