Typical Carhartt quality and cut in a Henley
on July 15, 2015
These Henley collar T-shirts are typical of traditional original fit Carhartt work clothing--well made and cut full and loose to allow non-binding movement. I've been a buyer of the standard Carhartt T-shirts for quite a while now and these Henley models are the same cut and fabric. I love the knit fabric weight and the way they fit. Generally, I buy T-shirts a size up from my normal size to allow for shrinkage over time and due to my dislike for clothing that clings and binds. Fact is, I probably wouldn't have to do that with these shirts since they're already a little over-sized to begin with. If you prefer a tighter fit in your T-shirts, go down one size. As for shrinkage over time, there's not really much to speak of. They shrink a little but not a full size.
I wear black T-shirts almost exclusively. They don't show soiling as easily as lighter colors and they go with any other color perfectly, looking nice under a casual sport shirt. The Carhartt black shirts will fade over time with normal laundering. They seem to fade a bit more than other brands I've owned but I don't mind this. The older shirts just get worn when I'm doing the dirtiest chores, the newer shirts for light tasks for just hanging out. If you can't abide fading, don't get the black shirts or just buy something else with polyester in the fabric.
Where the Henley collar T-shirt really comes into it's strength is in the heat. It's been in the mid to high 90's around here with humidity well above the 50% level. A standard T-shirt with its tight knit collar can become a bit warm due to trapping body heat. Unbuttoning the Henley collar on this loose-fitting Carhartt shirt allows a little more air circulation for cooling. It's not Carrier air conditioning cool but it's a help when you're outside in the hot weather.
I haven't found another brand of knit cotton shirt with the quality of fabric and fit that compares to Carhartt's Work Wear. The Henley's expand the styles beyond the traditional T-shirt and I like them a lot.
