Are multiple wives still lawful today and if so can they be practiced with the same ancient Biblical fervency?

I am currently researching the relevance of the practice of multiple wives of ancient Israelites and would like to know your thoughts on if it can and should be practiced is modern times.

Of course, Muslim nations still permit some Muslim quarters, it is said that polygamy is their version of a welfare system. A very rich man, for instance, should support multiple wives, since he can. Not much practiced elsewhere, save in some rumored enclaves that are offshoots of the Latterday Saints. The should is a difficult issue. For instance, since the ration of women to men is about 51% to 49%, this fact means that under monogamy, fully 2% of women are condemned to spinsterhood. I leave others to draw their own conclusions.
