Ms. Kelly does an outstanding job with the narration in this story. She gives you a smooth clean and clear audio that pulls you in as she painting a picture you have no trouble picturing the hurt, anger and sorrow. I really enjoyed her character voices, you have no trouble knowing who is talking and what they are feeling. The confusing and excitement along with the anger comes through very clear. Her tones are even, there was no background noise or any places where the volume changed it one steady listen. Her male voices are just as good as her female ones. I had no trouble picturing and feeling June’s anger, hurt, sorrow as all she wants is being taken away along with the excitement as they play out and the disappointment when they don’t always turn out as June wants.
I was hoping to learn more about Masie and her mother but you only see her for a short time and nothing about the mother she so loves. Masie’s brother JD has been and still is a sweet heart but that could change with the flick of a tongue giving away things that are hidden. June’s whole life is built on lies and when the truth comes out it will change her life forever. Does she tell or keep things to herself?
I thought the author would go one way but she took the story down a different route which was very entertaining. I am disappointed I thought this book would pick up where the last one left off but we are still hanging on what happens to Masie and her love. I really felt sorry for June’s family even though she learned this practice from a very young age it still could not have been easy for them. If I say anymore it will give the story away. It was a good read/listen it was nice to get to know June and JD better but again you are left with tons of question and no answers. Maybe the author will bring it all in focus giving us the whole story and an ending that has closure. I was disappointed but keeping an open mind until I see where the next book takes us.
We do get to see some of Maise, JD and the other characters from book 1 in this novella as well. The author is really doing an amazing job of setting us up for the full length novel and I for one can't wait!! I love the author's style of writing, her characters and all of the fun that she brings to the reader!
If you haven't read anything by this author, you are really missing out! Grab this one and her others and get started now!! She is a master storyteller, no matter what genre she is writing in! Sit back and enter the #RoaringTwenties - it will be an era that you will be sad you missed out on in real life!!
June has one of my favorite lines toward the end of the book, I won’ say it, but it’s about gold and you’re going to love it. She’s such a strong character and you can’t help but admire her. Despite everything, she holds her own, making JD and the reader love her all the more. June is a strong girl who carries big secrets, and she still manages to let people into her life and find her own happiness, making her incredibly relatable.
I loved seeing this new side to JD. It really gives us a better picture of him and his life that is only touched on in Gilded Cage. We also see Maisie come into her own a bit more and I love it.
This was a brilliant follow up to the first novelette and will leave you wanting more (and fast!) This is a series that’s so easy to get caught up in. You race through the pages to see what happens and want to yell at the author for more when you reach the end all too soon. Ms. Ficklin takes the bright shininess of the prohibition era and brings out the dark side hidden among the glitter, hitting you so hard and fascinating you so completely that when you close the book, you have a hard time adjusting to using modern slang and taking your sparkly headpiece off. It’s not fair and it’s kind of perfect! I highly recommend getting wrapped up in this series…it’s gold.
