The On2 supra-aural monitor has all the previous features of the older On1 but with improved construction and durability. The On2 features accurate, professional studio monitor sound and imaging. It has an enhanced 40mm speaker driver with upgraded acoustics for more accurate sound reproduction and a larger sound stage, while offering deep bass extension and clear high frequencies that thinksound is known for. Includes two detachable Kevlar reinforced, tangle resistant fabric cables with and without a microphone and single button control.
Top customer reviews
I would highly recommend them to anyone that enjoys higher end sound. Don't know how they would compare to a $2000 pair but then again I would'nt be buying them anyway.
If there is one complaint (and its minor) it would be that cable could be longer.
Portability and quality of life:
Two very useful features of these headphones are not mentioned nearly enough in the reviews: these headphones can be easily folded to be very compact (less than 2 inches thick while fitting on the palm of your hand), and the cables (2 are included) come with very high quality anti-tangle braiding, and they are removable. This makes them the most portable audiophile on-ears I have seen. In a few seconds you can take them off, fold them, and store them flat in your laptop bag (cable on or off). As someone who travels a lot, this is more useful than I would have ever thought. Moreover, the fact the cable is detachable increases the longevity of these headphones, as not only can they be replaced by any 3.5 cable (if you manage to break both), but events like catching the cable on a door every other day will not deteriorate the connection over time.
The clarity is superb, as is the balance between mids and highs. As others have commented, they are not for the basshead, but they do have a tiny boost in bass compared to purely flat headphones. String instruments and piano sound outstanding. The only mild downside is the sound stage, which is important for some classical works. It is not bad by any means (I would say it is above average), but it is slightly below the level of the other features of this pair of cans. This is a good trade-off for me considering how portable and light they are. For the best sound stage you should probably look to over-ear (full size), open headphones, which come with their own obvious downsides. As others have said, I recommend getting a DAC + amp, or at least an amp.
Usage with smartphones
These may not be the best headphones if you plan to use them with a smartphone unless you use an amp. Check out the portable FiiO amps, it makes a big difference. When listening to them straight out of my Galaxy S7, the drop in quality, separation, clarity and soundstage is immediately apparent (they are still pleasant to listen to). They may be driven better by something like an HTC 10, as the S7 is notorious for its terrible sound.
Artists like Sierra Hull, The Steel Wheels, Punch Brothers, and Elephant Revival all sound fantastic.
The bass is defined, but balanced. The highs are detailed, but warm. The mids are well represented, but not harsh.
Fit is excellent. They have soft pads, are well balanced, adjustable, and lightweight. I wear glasses, so on-ear is the best choice for me (I don't prefer in-ears).
Passive noise isolation is quite effective.
crystal clear highs beautifully. Congratulations Aaron Fournier these are truly the audiophile's
