Product Description

Otus mini speakers look like earbuds but deliver stereo sound to you without being in your ear to block the sounds around you. Just like listening to the stereo in your room, except on your bike or board, on the trail or at work. Everything attaches to your helmet, hard hat or sweat band so you are tangle free, hassle free and ready to "Hear What you've been Missin'!" Patent Pending. In many states it is illegal to operate a vehicle (yes that includes bikes and skateboards) with earbuds in your ear - more states are creating legislation every year. It is dangerous, however, in all 50 states and Canada. O-tus IS the solution! With O-tus 15 watt near-ear speakers, you can hear background sounds (bikes, cars, emergency vehicles, and your friend's whining ) and have your own personal surround sound stereo. All without long chords to tangle and untangle.

I posted a review to the Otus site, and it quickly disappeared.

The price of these was good enough for me to take the risk of the bad reviews on Amazon, but, as with all risks, you lose some as well as gain some. In this case it was a lose.

First the positives. I had no problem with the little velcro-like strips. They seemed to hold both the speakers and my iPod nano firmly to my helmet.

So if the speakers had delivered the promised sound to my ears, I would have been delighted. But they were pathetic. I should say here that I diligently followed the instructional Youtubes on the Otus site, re-jigging all of the podcasts on iPlayer so that they would play back at the maximum volume. I made sure that volume control was turned off on my iPod. I experimented with equaliser settings. I tried their 'lap' test (with helmet upturned in your lap, you should *just* be able to hear the speakers).

However, the result was that I could only barely hear either music or podcast when travelling at a sedate speed on a still day in a back street with no traffic. For travelling at any speed with the wind rushing past my ears, let alone in the city traffic (I have a 28km return commute to work) they might as well have not been working at all. The most I got was the odd bit of sibilance.

I'm very disappointed, because I would have loved to think I could listen to my iPod safely on the way to work (BTW it works no better with and iPhone; I tried). But, while they sound good in theory, these speakers aren't the solution.

Despite what a lot of the other reviews have said I have never had an issue with low volume or not being able to hear my music.

But the reason for the 2 start rating is that I have gone through 4 sets in 2 years due to one side or the other shorting out. Sometimes Otus has warranties them and sometimes they don't. To be clear -- I've taken very good care of them and it doesn't matter, they always short out. For the price they cost that's not acceptable.

It's not really their fault, just the nature of wind noise. Above about 8mph there is just too much wind noise for the sound from these speakers to be audible. I wanted to use them on my daily commute on an electric bicycle on which I average 20mph, and for that they are completely useless.
For cruising down the boardwalk at 5mph they would probably work great. Or if you have a full-face helmet that blocks the wind, then they'd probably be loud enough.

I couldn't get them loud enough with any combination of settings on my smartphone, and was nowhere near the "15W" power rating of the speakers, even if that quote means 7.5W per speaker, so I tailor-made an amplifier to take full advantage of the speakers. again, well before even 7.5W, they began to fuzz and crackle terribly, even with a nice clean sine wave right at the 1/8" stereo plug. their website now calls them "mini-speakers with improved drivers", hopefully that means they work now, mine never did.

I purchased the O-tus mini-speakers, and really wanted them to work well, as it's a great concept. It's not easy to get the speakers to fit on your helmet, though, and the only way I could do so was to use duct tape on both of them, and that did work. Well, it worked until the wire to one of the speakers shorted out, anyway, thus leaving me with one ear of music, and one ear of semi-music, semi-static--obviously, not good. The other problem is that the speakers aren't really quite loud enough to be satisfying--on some music they're fine, on other music you have to sort of strain to hear... So, I'm done with my O-tus mini-speakers, alas, and just purchased a Tunebug, which at least has received better reviews. I haven't attached it to my bike helmet yet, but am hopeful that it will work better than the O-tus. Here's the link, if anyone wants to try it:

Ordered via America so also had to pay import charge, so worked out very expensive. Apart from that they did not come with a bluetooth receiver so had to plug straight into Ipod. Even so the sound was very poor and once riding along could not hear the music.

I was really excited about getting this product, and when I tried it in my house it was really nice an loud. When biking... This product was barely audible even after doing the iTunes volume boost ( which just made my songs sound fuzzy) the wind over powered the gap between the speaker and my ear. Plus the Velcro stuff that keeps the speaker attached to the helmet is really weak and the speaker falls off with the slightest pressure. I recommend getting headphones that are big enough to stretch over the helmet.
