If you think you know all monsters you know know those in I ZOMBIE series. Like Book 1 Dead to the World we start off with Halloween night trick or treat kids having fun. This book than give up the untold background of some of the main characters such as how Scott turned into a were dog; first met Ellie and Gwen and the spirit of his grandpa got stuck inside the body of chimp. This book also have more of Scott comic imagination of him and his friends that are real cute including his own version of Scooby Doo and Casper Scare School. We learn more of the true monster Galatea plans for the world and how the paintball vampires attempt to call a truce with the vampire hunters. Gwen goes on a date with one of the monster hunters keeping secret that she too is a monster. Gwen has the task of passing on a message to someone who knew her when she was alive.

While I almost always talk about the writer's work before the author's, I need to comment on Mike Allred. I am not a Mike Allred fan. His work usually doesn't interest me. Here, however, his work is fantastic. His Gwen is haunting (no pun intended). The characters are distinct and fresh. Now, onto Chris Roberson. He crafts a Buffy-esque world, which I'm sure was the goal based on the Scooby Gang references. His dialogue in spot on and the plot is building to something big. This series is a fun book and has a ton of potential.

This isn't the best follow-up to the charming first book of iZombie; uVampire instead focuses more on the individual characters which, although important, might be a bit too early to do so as the main story feels a bit under-developed. Nevertheless we get the origin stories of Scott the Were-Terrier and Ellie the Ghost, and more background to Gwen's past life without revealing the whole story - yet. The paintball vampires square off against the monster hunters Diogenes and Horatio and a new character, the mysterious Galatea, appears at the same time numerous bodies from the city's morgues begin disappearing.

Gwen has to eat a human brain each month to stave off becoming a shambling, mindless zombie but in turn she inherits that person's memories and, being the kindly soul she is, she tries to help right any wrongs that were unresolved at the time of their deaths. This book's mission leads her the daughter of the dead mother who was also, coincidentally, Gwen's best friend when they were kids but it's also not the most interesting quest as it's basically about telling the daughter that she's sorry about the way her mother treated her when she was alive, not the most original of messages.

The people of Eugene, Oregon must be the most accepting people in the world because dead people walking up to them in the street barely fazes them - Gwen walks up to her childhood friend who knows Gwen's dead but gets over that fact real quick. Also earlier in the book Ellie possesses a man for a while but when she leaves him, he ambles off pleasantly holding his head with a puzzled look on his face - why wasn't he completely freaked out by being possessed by a ghost?!

Chris Roberson's writing is also a bit lacking in this book.

Gwen the zombie girl who digs graves to get the brai drive
ns and she needs. Spot the were-terrier, hairy a. Ellend harmless. Elle the ghost from the 1960s. All this and more face down a coven of vampires. Wedo you getll add in Diogenes and Horatio who work for a secret organization of monster Hunters. It adds up to a lot of fun.

Enjoyable read. I like the "light-heartedness" of this series compared to most supernatural stories.
