I had no problems at all with backup with this drive. With Win 7, the "eject" function worked fine. I installed a USB 3.0 card, which worked perfectly with 2 other drives (including Seagate 3.0TB). This drive just dropped dead?

A
Yes, as the backup is on the external hard drive ready.

A
It is always better to unplug a USB device with the power off. That protects you from a spark or mini surge which can damage your computer or your serial device.
