Joël Dicker was born in Geneva in 1985, where he studied Law. THE TRUTH ABOUT THE HARRY QUEBERT AFFAIR was nominated for the Prix Goncourt and won the Grand Prix du Roman de l'Académie Française and the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens. It soon became a worldwide success in 2014, publishing in 42 countries and selling more than 3.5 million copies. In the UK it was a Times number one bestseller, and was chosen for the Richard and Judy Book Club as well as Simon Mayo's Radio 2 Book Club.

In May 2017 his novel THE BALTIMORE BOYS, already making waves across Europe and number one in several countries, will be published for the first time in English. Both a sequel and a prequel to THE TRUTH ABOUT THE HARRY QUEBERT AFFAIR, it will centres around traumatic events that blight the lives of the Baltimore branch of Marcus Goldman's family.

As the author stated in the last chapter, a good book is when the reader is sad to have left the characters. I’ll be thinking of them for quite a while.

The book is written in a style of French that is easy enough for a non native French speaker to easily understand. Not pretentious, but precise.

To me this novel was a mix of Twin Peaks, a Midsomer Murders kind of a who-done-it mystery, mixed with a beautiful novel about friendship, love and jealousy. I don't know why some of the reviews are so negative. Probably because there is a lot of violence and some sexual content in it, or perhaps because a European writer is not supposed to write about the hidden secrets of a small American town. This could have been written by Stephen King (New Hampshire, you know). I read the novel in the original french version, and several times I had to check that it was the original version and not a french translation of an American novel. Also a very good ironic parody on the book publishing industry, and ultimately a warning : do not trust that the author a succesful book really wrote it. A Homerean matter in other words. Highly recommended;

A long, twisty mystery, perfect stay-at-home pandemic reading. The prose was fairly easy to read for an intermediate French student like me. Moreover the book was evocative of the summers I spent as a kid at Hampton Beach, NH and Cape Cod. Although the fictional town of Aurora, NH doesn't match any of these locales exactly, it did make me nostalgic for those idealized New England summer days. Beyond that, it's a mystery, so nothing about the plot. You can read the blurbs on Amazon or elsewhere. Enjoy.

First thing about this book: it's long. Sometimes it's hard to pick this up when you're browsing for Kindle books.

As to be expected from a foreigner writing in an American setting, there are some cliches (think diners, burgers.) It keeps you turning pages and especially towards the end the plot takes some interesting twists. I would recommend it as a good murder mystery.

It's set in New England, which was a plus for me given that I have spent quite a bit of time there (as has the author.)

Three solid stars for the plot, which is not obvious, and deftly leads the reader by the nose in different directions until one slowly starts to get the feeling for what "La Verite" may be. With all that, the writing seldom rises above banality, and never becomes original enough not to feel derivative. The characters are one-dimensional and plainly talk too much - which is not a problem all by itself - characters in Eric Rohmer's movies also mostly talk, but Rohmer managed to make them real. Here is more like (quoting the not so dead parrot from "Zazie Dans le Metro": "Tu causes, tu causes, c'est tout ce que tu sais faire". With all that, Nola comes across alive, even if only through the eyes of others, and the book inside the book also gets a life of its own (which is more that can be said about others). But it could be a basis for a great movie!

At first it was good. Then the author started telling us how to write a good book. This wasn't one. There were too many endings - he kept adding a new fact and changing the bad guy or girl. The town he was describing turned out to be made up primarily of crazy people. This may fit French views of Americans, but does not fit any place in America I know of. I think the author was trying too hard. Too bad - he had a good start.

Encensé par la presse, ce roman est décevant à plus d'un titre: personnages sans âme et peu attachants, trame tirée par les cheveux jusqu'à l'épuisement, rebondissements à n'en plus finir, au point de devvenir lassants, Deus ex machina à tous les étages (j'exagère à peine), dialogues mal construits et peu naturels, et puis cette gamine à laquelle on ne parvient à s'attacher et qui ne cesse de répéter les mêmes platitudes pubertaires à cet homme à qui on a envie de mettre une gifle pour le réveiller. J'ai arrêté la lecture à l'avant dernier chapitre, au énième rebondissement, à la énième invraisemblance, ne voulant pas toucher le fond d'un compte à rebour annoncé par la numérotation inverse des chapitres.
Ici la littérature perd son âme...

Comme beaucoup, j'ai été ébloui par les commentaires dithyrambiques, que ce soit sur Amazon ou sur la 4eme de couv. J'ai lu 250 pages et je n'en peux plus, c'est terriblement mauvais. Je m'explique.

Tout d'abord c'est censé se passé au nord est des Etats Unis. Pourquoi ? L'auteur n'y a manifestement jamais mis les pieds. Les personnages sont des caricatures d'americains, vu d'un oeil tout a fait franchouillard (je sais que l'auteur est suisse). Les republicains sont mechants, les democrates gentils ,et de maniere generale vous prenez tout les personnages et les transportez n'importe ou en France c'est pareil.

Ensuite les deux personnages "principaux" : au bout de 250 pages leur relation d'amitié reste fabriquée de toute piece, on y croit pas un seul instant. Quant au narrateur, jeune, adulé suite a premier roman, se considere comme un genie de la littérature ... on sens l'image puerile que Dicker veut se donner de lui.

Harry Quebert quant a lui, pareil, on ne croit pas une seule seconde a son histoire d'amour folle pour une gamine de 15 ans d'une niaiserie sans nom ("vous ne m'aimez plus parce que j'ai été mechante ?"). D'ailleurs lui aussi et censé être un professeur de litterature et un graaaaand écrivaine et sort des trucs du genre "elle vit litteralement en moi" (va falloir se renseigner sur le sens du mot "litteralement", ou alors on est plus dans Alien).

Les personnages secondaires, pareil : le flic qui est censé enqueter sur le meurtre donne evidemment des details de l'enquete au narrateur sans le connaitre, on se demande comment c'est possible.

Quant au style, mon dieu ... on dirait la premiere tentative de roman d'un etudiant en premiere année de prepa littéraire.

Je suis severe mais j'avoue ne pas me souvenir d'avoir lu un livre a tout point ridiculement nul et en contraste avec la machine marketing qui allait avec. Je suis en colere d'avoir perdu ce temps de lecture.

De grace, ne tombez pas dans le panneau, il y a tellement de vrais auteur avec du talent.
