This book is getting blasted pretty good on other sites and is not apparently well loved here...On another site, referencing the crow hunting chapter, the 'reviewer' blasts the book for having photos that 'commemorate animal murder.' Why someone with views like that would even pick up a book on hunting, I have no idea, but there you go...Number one: hunting is a legimate and necessary sport. Secondly, crows being notorious egg eaters, they inflict horrible damage on the populations of both game birds, waterfowl and even our song birds. Their numbers MUST be controlled. Wipe out crows? With Shotguns? HA! Using the figures that Popowski supplies in the crow hunting chapter, a little basic math, (and rough rounding of figures here and there, granted) it is fairly easy to come up with crow hunters dispatching one million crows a year. This was in 1962...its now 2014, so at the million a year figure, by now, 52 million crows have been sent into the Void by human hunters...and there is not the slightest speck of evidence that crow numbers have diminshed in anyway.

Another criticism I don't get is the complaints that the info in the book is dated. The book, as I stated above, is over half a century old..Mr. Popowski, no spring chicken even then, has probably passed on by now...(Purely a guess...but I am thinking he was in the 50s when the book was written.) But one major point here, and it is a big one; there is no need to reinvent the wheel...basic sound information remains basic sound information even 50 years later.

The book is enjoyable reading...it is interesting to read the contrasts in Popowski's views, even within the chapter..he seems to have had a real grudge against magpies, for an example, but certain amount of respect seeps through too..

The crow hunting section had nothing about where or how to properly distribute decoys. It seemed quite dated as far as available calling equipment as well. Overall I was disappointed.

When we were kids 60 years ago it was our bible re crow hunting. It served as a reminder of happy times when we were invincible and destined to live forever.
