Scrittore molto noto negli anni Venti e Trenta, amato dal giovane Primo Levi, Feuchtwanger si trasferí in Francia dopo l'ascesa di Hitler al potere. Ma allo scoppio della guerra, in quanto proveniente da un Paese nemico, fu internato in un campo ricavato in una ex fornace di mattoni vicino ad Aix-en-Provence. Il libro è il resoconto della lunga estate del 1940 quando lo scrittore, insieme ad altri duemila tedeschi e austriaci, vive un'esperienza sempre piú angosciante man mano che le truppe della Wehrmacht avanzano nella Francia collaborazionista e si avviano a «liberare» i connazionali internati.

Racconto acuto, ironico nella sua drammaticità, scritto in una prosa asciutta e al contempo riflessiva in cui l'autore riesce a vedere se stesso con l'occhio di uno scrittore e non di una vittima. Con la consapevolezza di narrare, in prima persona, una serie di episodi che preludono alla fine di un mondo. (...) L'opera piú importante di Feuchtwanger è la trilogia su Flavio Giuseppe, comandante delle truppe ebraiche ai tempi della guerra contro Roma, passato dalla parte dei Romani. Flavio Giuseppe era un traditore? O piuttosto un uomo colto che odiava i fanatici integralisti ebrei e ammirava il cosmopolitismo dei Romani? In ogni caso è lui il fondatore del canone della narrazione laica ebraica e forse il primo vero cronista di guerra. Feuchtwanger con ogni probabilità si identificava con Flavio Giuseppe, se non altro perché professava il cosmopolitismo come un modo di vivere e pensare. Ma capiva anche che l'Europa non era piú un luogo per i cosmopoliti. (...) E, amara ironia della storia, Il Diavolo in Francia, in questa Europa di oggi, dove la condizione del profugo e dell'apolide ci interpella perché specchio deforme e quindi fedele della nostra condizione umana, si rivela un testo piú che mai attuale.
