Most difficult puzzle I've found

Do you have a person in your life who likes puzzles? Do they finish puzzles in a matter of hours and seem to enjoy it? Do they say obnoxious things like, "that was easy!" and "oh, I don't use the picture"? Well, if you want to crush their spirit and make them hate puzzles forever, this is the gift for them!

My husband is so good at "difficult" puzzles that everyone in our family has stopped trying to give him puzzles he enjoys, we're trying to give him puzzles that he can't solve. We've dried solid color puzzles, clear acrylic puzzles, micro-piece puzzles,

He has been working on this for five hours so far and all he has done is the border and two adjacent pieces from the middle. The pieces are tiny and don't assemble together securely so even if he gets anything together they don't stay together well.

Right now he's enjoying it because it's a challenge, but this might be the one that defeats him.

Deliberately Missing 1 Piece (updated)

UPDATE: I have bought another one and this time it's not missing any piece. Probably bad luck before.

I think the manufacturer got greedy and decided to boost sales by taking out exactly 1 piece from each box. Here's why:

In 2014 I bought the white hell, spent 2 months on it but ended up realizing that exactly 1 piece was missing. Frustrated, I decided to order another box from Amazon, found the missing piece and finished the puzzle.

Almost 6 years later around the end of 2019, I decided to challenge myself again with the black hell. With previous experience I did it much faster this time, finished in 1 week except, again, a missing piece. Calmly I just ordered another box from Amazon, but then found out to my despair that it's cut differently than the previous box, so it doesn't fit!

Then I thought, maybe the new box is complete, so I just have to start from scratch. But just to be safe, I decided to count the number of pieces first to avoid another heartbreak. And it turned out the new box also contains only 999 pieces!
