I have listened to this cd for about a month now and decided to finally write a review, seeing as no one else has.I hope this doesn't mean that people are not checking this brilliant young trumpeter out because they would really be missing something. I have been a fan for about 10 years and this release is one of his best. The cd begins with "60th & Broadway" - an uptempo number with great group interaction which sets the stage for the rest of the album. "Dark Times" is a slow melody, effectively conveying the mood of the song title. "Interior Motive" begins with great bass and drums interplay between young bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Obed Calvaire..Jones enters with muted trumpet reminiscent of Miles Davis with his 60's quartet. This is one of my favorite tracks. "The Morning After" follows as a beautiful ballad. Next is another of my favorites - "I Don't Give A Damn Blues". Just listen and you'll see what he means. More group interaction-this time between bassist Curtis and the fantastic pianist Orrin Evans-kicks off "Dr. Jekyll"and gets a hot track off to a rousing start. The standard "How High The Moon" is next and Jones' soloing is the high point here. "We'll Meet Under The Stars" follows and is my favorite ballad on the cd-very romantic and soulful solong from Sean once again. Another hot track follows - "New Journey" - and this track features great musicianship from the entire group with memorable lead lines. "Don't Fall Off The L.E.J." is written by pianist Evans and one listen will show you why he is finally getting the recognition he has always deserved. If you like what you hear you should also check out his new record.Read more ›

Listening to the music on Sean Jones Improvise one arrives at the impression that the musician had channeled the old greats from the 60s Bluenote era. Just as a layman I get the impression that not a single note here was random, as we are led to believe a lot are in jazz, that goes for the rest of the quartet as well. This is the kind of music that is perfect for an intimate little listening party. I'm talking about every single track from 60th & Broadway and Dark Times to Not While I'm Around. When you consider the fact that the producer was none other than Christian McBride himself you can see why. It has the classical feel of McBride's Kind of Brown album, also with a very smooth, lyrical execution. Among the several albums Jones put out, this is the one that stands out, intended to be generous to the ear of the listener, not simply to display his skills, his adventurousness as a young musician in this all to often hip hop infiltrated genre.

Trumpeter Sean Jones has stated that "im.pro.vise = Never Before Seen" is his first album for Mack Avenue recorded live-in-the-studio, with no overdubs. If so, this would explain the more muscular, stripped-down and roomy sound im.pro.vise yields compared to any of his six previous solo releases. A greater sense of spontaneity is also heard on im.pro.vise, yet the compositions remain tightly focused, with a prevailing sense of drama and anticipation.

A highly regarded musician and jazz educator, Sean Jones covers new ground with this spirited release. A trumpeter in the style of Wynton Marsalis, and sometimes Clifford Brown, Mr. Jones produces a large, rounded tone, and is capable of conveying a wide range of emotions through his mouthpiece; from excitement and adventure to anger and loss. His playing is competent and authoritative, but devoid of any pretentiousness. Sean Jones performs within the framework of his quartet, not on top of it.

Pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Obed Calvaire complete the quartet, creating a very full sound of mostly original compositions. The production, similar to many contemporary jazz releases, is bright and up-front-and-center, yet not so gushing as to obscure the music's details.

During the first minute of "60th & Broadway" SJ blows some janky, off-kilter notes while Calvaire busts some scatter-shot snare. At second sixty, however, the entire quartet kicks in, digging a swinging groove; a tendency that will continue for the remaining 69 minutes of the album.

"Dark Times" is not newly composed, but is freshly brought to life with a gorgeously soaring trumpet motif. Contrast this to SJ's lengthy, screeching, discordant bleats at mid-point, and the gentle, yet dramatic, way "Dark Times" fades.

I saw Sean Jones with the Mack Avenue All-Stars and decided to buy this album based on his excellent mainstream performance with the band.

This is one of those albums where I can't find anything to grab onto. It really leans toward the avant garde, something I'm not interested in at all. Not recommended.

I recently had the pleasure of seeing "A Tribute To Miles Davis & Gil Evans: Still Ahead" at the acoustically perfect Disney Hall in LA with Terence Blanchard & Sean Jones trading leads with members of the LA Phil, and a rhythm section that included drummer Peter Erskine, in a full recreation of Miles Ahead, Sketches of Spain, Porgy & Bess, and even parts of Quiet Nights. In an evening of near-perfect performance, Sean Jones stood out. Anyone who can take on Miles and not fail, is someone to be reckoned with.Even fellow-trumpeter Terence Blanchard's good-natured chiding of Jones for being "too good", was not far off the mark. This is a stunning talent.
His recorded work is no exception.
