The Curl Machine has three settings, Wavy, Loose, and Tight curls. Each setting is preset with a specific amount of seconds, which are counted down on the digital face at the bottom of the handle. When the time is up, it beeps, signaling you to push the button and release the hair. Viola! A perfect curl, every time! It also has options for left, right, or alternating curls.
My girls range in age from 8 to 16 and they can all use this Magic Curl Machine without any problems. They love to curl their own and each others hair and now I have the peace of mind that they won't burn themselves or each other or damage their hair.
I had a New Year's Eve Party to go to, so I had my 12 year old curl my hair with the Magic Curl Machine. We divided the hair into 5 layers and used the tight curl setting, curling only to the right (that's what I wanted for the look I was going for). We sprayed each layer with a light mist of fast drying aerosol hairspray to set the curls so they would hold up in the hairdo. We took pictures as each layer was completed to show you how it turned out. I was amazed at how fabulous my hair turned out and how fast she curled my hair. She curled my long thick hair into tight uniform curls in 40 minutes.
We love the Black Magic Curl Machine from xtava and highly recommend it!
Review Update: 2/23/2017
After using this curling machine for a little over a month, now, I can give further insight into the problem of when your hair gets stuck or tangled inside the machine. The key is DO NOT PANIC! When your hair becomes tangled and stuck in the machine and sucks up to your head too tightly (as it has mine on several occasions due to not getting the hair in correctly or starting too close to my head), just slowly pull the curler down and out away from your head and use your other hand to hold your hair at the top of your head. This will gradually pull your hair out of the curler without pulling your hair from the scalp. This has worked for me everytime without damaging my hair or pulling out a ton (you will lose a few strands, of course).
DO NOT unplug or turn off the machine as this will leave your hair stuck in the machine and the curler cannot aid you in releasing your hair.
DO NOT switch directions and push the button thinking that it will unwind your hair. This will only wind your hair up tighter and make it almost impossible to get your hair out without taking it apart.
DO NOT panic! Stay calm and think it through. Your hair will come out easily if you just put tension on it and let the machine help you allowing the roller inside to turn as you pull your hair down and out to release your hair. It will just take a little time and patience. It's worked everytime (dozens) for me.
Update: April 07, 2017
I haven't had my hair get caught in the machine, now, for the last 10 times, as I have learned to avoid the causes. :)
*Note: Hair getting caught up in the roller is not a curler error, but a user error. There is a little learning curve to using the Black Magic Curl Machine. The key to success without stress to your locks is to use small sections (about the size of your index finger), don't start too close to your head (stay about an 1" away), and don't push the button when you are trying to release it. This causes it to try to roll it the opposite direction (when set to alternate).
You will get the hang of it quickly.
We absolutely love the Black Magic Curl Machine at our home and will be purchasing another so that the 6 girls in our family aren't 'fighting' over who has dibbs. haha
And when it’s stuck is pretty effin scary. There was one point while my arm was aching from holding the curler above my head that I was tempted to cut the damn thing off and have gross uneven pieces of hair. But then I was scared too, because I was alone and using scissors to try and cut my hair made me think of other options. Like driving to my sister’s place with the curler hanging on and having her help me. Or... try again to get the damn thing off. With patience I was able to get the thing to release my hair.
Again, it works. It does curl hair. I was able to curl my mom’s just above shoulder hair very well. So short hair it works best.
