If Zoom tweaked the internals to produce a better voice then the Zoom usb modem would be the best on the market (even compared to the expensive multitech).
It always worked a little flukey, likely because I am faxing over a digital Vonage line. I also have an efax account, so whenever I had trouble with sending a fax via the modem, I would just use efax. I prefer to use the modem however because efax delivers faxes via email WHICH IS NOT SECURE. No one else seems to mind this, including mortgage brokers, banks, etc. who have "faxed" my private data back and forth to me via efax (email). But I do.
Anyway, I bought this Zoom modem to replace the Apple USB Modem and it seems to work just like the other. So far I haven't had any problems sending faxes, but I likely will because, again, I'm sending them across a digital line. But for what I want and need, this unit does the trick - and it arrived quickly and installed easily. I did have a question during installation and called Zoom and easily got a hold of a live rep who was easy to talk to and got me going quickly. That's hard to find these days.
After I had many internet drop outs from my External US Robotics Modem, Model U13-4292 PN USR 5637, for my lap top, I read a review about it and found out why this was happening. Apparently from this reviewer after the Robotics Modem gets too hot after a few hours of use it may become unstable and begin to intermittently drop your Internet connection. I then began a search for a better external modem and found the Zoom USB Mini External Modem Model 3095. It had no reviews, good or bad at the time so I thought I would try it out. Am I ever glad I made that decision. This Zoom Modem has performed flawlessly ever since I got it on 10-1-11. Not one drop out ever, not even after 8 hours of continuous use. Another thing that I am pleased with is that I can hear it dialing and making a connection through my speakers and hear the handshaking sounds that I could not hear with my US Robotics. I am well pleased with its performance and would recommend it as a good buy.
Ps. i've tried this and the generic model, no noticeable difference between the two.
That being said, it worked perfectly. But if you have a laptop with blue-tooth capability i recommend you research Bluetooth modems BEST INVESTMENT EVER :P
