About Mark Moore
I like Excel. I'm pretty good at Excel. I've been working in corporate finance for a looong time (over 25 years). I studied Finance in college and I also went to graduate school (I say this for the people who are really concerned about my 'qualifications').
I want to make you an Excel rock star. It doesn't matter what industry you are in, you need to get better at Excel. Excel is THE killer application used in business. Don't cower in the corner when someone mentions Excel! You're better than that! Stand proud, laugh derisively and yell, 'I can do that, and more, in Excel!" You may want to wave your arms around melodramatically for added effect.
Before you do that though, buy my lessons. If you don't, you're kind of putting the cart before the horse. FIRST buy and read my lessons, THEN do the laughing thing.
The lessons are short. That is by design. One lesson = one topic. No fluff. I don't like fluff in my Excel. Fluff on kittens and ferrets, ok that's acceptable. In an Excel book? Nope. You're just going to get the info you need on one topic. Learn it and use it when you are done. No muss, no fuss.
Ohh yeah, each lesson comes with a few Excel workbooks so you can work through the exercises. Practice makes perfect!
Finally, you can also email me with any questions you have. I've helped many readers with their Excel problems. Don't be shy. Ask away.
OK, enough about me. Well not really, this is MY author page isn't it? It's ALL ABOUT ME!
*This author page is not to be considered a reflection of the content of Mark Moore's Excel lessons. Mark tones down his 'personality' while writing his lessons. However, a few jokes have been known to sneak past the editors and into the lessons.
The lessons are good. Seriously. Look at the reviews.
Author tidbit: I never learned how to type. After years of bad typing, my fingers are now habituated to typing 'teh' instead of 'the'. I HATE it.
Does anyone really read these author bio's?

Excel is the most accessible program for data analysis. Power Query (also known as Get & Transform) takes that one step further. The first step of any data analysis project is importing the data. Related to that, you must clean and standardize the data (aka ETL: Extract, Transform and Load)
Power Query has all that covered. You will learn to set up Power Query for connecting Excel to all kinds of data sources, performing hundreds of ETL tasks and loading clean data into your worksheet. Power Query can extract data from columns, join columns, remove duplicates, skip errors, join tables, the list is almost endless.
Additionally, Power Query is set up to remember all the steps you performed and it will redo them with a single click of a button.
Learn to use Power Query and save yourself hours of work.
This short lesson covers Excel applications (apps). Apps are almost like the apps you find on your smartphone. In the Excel world, an app is a small, programmed interface that interacts with Excel data to extend your spreadsheet's functionality.
Excel come with two apps built by Microsoft. You will learn how to use these apps to add dynamic charts to your worksheets. There is no programming involved with these apps. They do all the work for you.
As with all my other lessons, this one comes with two follow along workbooks. One you can use to work through the exercises and the other one has the completed exercises.
Once again, if you do not have Excel 2013 or Office 365 for Windows, you will not be able to use this lesson!
This lesson doesn't have a full follow along workbook. It does have a follow along text file. The text file contains the macro that we will debug. It is much faster to import the macro and not have you type in macro code line by line.
As with all lessons, this one also comes with follow along workbooks. The first one is the initial starting invoice and I have also included the end result for your reference.
As usual, the lesson comes with several follow along workbooks that you can use to work through the exercises at your own pace.
As with all the other lessons, there is a sample workbook you can get from my website to follow along with the exercises.
In this lesson we cover how to write IF statements in VBA. The IF statement is the basic unit of logic in Excel programming. It gives your program the ability to 'think' and perform actions based on one or several conditions. Along with that topic, we review how to use the OFFSET function programmatically and the ActiveCell.
As with all the other lessons, there is a sample workbook you can get from my website to follow along with the exercises.
Pivot tables are the indispensable skill you need to know to master Excel. They are the workhorses of Excel. You have 100,000 rows of data by invoice, product, salesperson and you are getting bombarded with questions. Who’s the highest earner? Which product sold the most in the last seven days.
After this lesson, you’ll be able to answer those questions in seconds.
This lesson is laser focused on this incredibly power tool.
I walk you through all the steps to create a pivot table, how to work with pivot charts, using Excel tables effectively with Pivot Tables, how to create calculations in Pivot Tables, and much more.
As always, I explain all the steps in plain English. The lessons are geared towards the average Excel user that just wants to improve their skill set without having to suffer through hours of technical, confusing instruction.
Included in the book is a link to download a free workbook so you can follow along with the exercises at your own pace.
What are dynamic arrays, you ask? They are a rebuild of the Excel calculation engine and the inclusion of several new formulas that are simply amazing.
Seriously. Once you see and use this version of Excel, it will totally change how you build files. You will be able to do things that weren't possible unless you wanted to write complex macros.
This lesson covers the new formulas:
- Unique
- Sort
- SortBy
- Filter
- Randarray
- Sequence
- and how the calculation engine of Excel has changed
NOTE: These formulas are not available in Excel 2016. They are only available in Excel that is part of Office 365. You can test your version by typing in =SEQUENCE(10) and pressing Enter. If you get a #NAME? error, you do not have the correct version of Excel for this lesson.
If you want to perform heavy duty analysis on large data sets, as in well over 1,000,000 rows, this bundle is for you. These new features let Excel crunch through data extremely efficiently.
Even if you don't have massive data sets, you can still use Power View and Power Map to create seriously impressive presentations.
This is a huge lesson, tipping the scales at 212 pages. Lots of great stuff in here!
Note: Microsoft has moved Power Map and Power View to Power BI desktop. Power BI desktop is free to download from Microsoft. Power Map and Power View material still applies for these tools.
This bundle contains the following lessons:
- Mastering Excel: Power Query (Get data form external sources)
- Mastering Excel: Power Pivot (Create a data model with tables and relationships)
- Mastering Excel: Power View (Create a new type of Excel presentation)
- Mastering Excel: Power Map (Show data in animated maps)
This lesson focuses on Shared Workbooks. This is a feature in Excel where a workbook can be set up so that multiple users can have it open at the same time and make changes to it. When a workbook is shared, Excel also begins to track all changes made to any cell or formula. We will cover how to track changes, make advanced adjustments to change tracking and how to save changes permanently.
We will also review how to set up protection for specific workbook cells so that only users with the password can change those specified cells.
Like the previous lessons, a follow along workbook is available (the link is inside the book) where you can follow step by step with the lesson.
The lesson and follow along workbook are for Excel 2013 for Windows.
I'll cover all that and a bit more in a step-by-step fashion with tons of images. My lessons are written with regular users in mind. No technical jargon. As always, when you buy my lessons, I am here to answer any question you may have.
There is a link in the eBook where you can download follow-along workbooks so you can read and practice to learn the tasks.
